PREPARING LEADERS IN STEM EDUCATION

The M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction — STEM prepares secondary math and science teachers in high-need school districts to become leaders in science, technology, engineering and math education. Please direct questions to LHFellowship@uh.edu.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The program is a partnership between the UH College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the UH College of Education.

Length of master's program: 14 months

Degree received: Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a STEM emphasis

Instruction model: hybrid online and face-to-face classes, conducive to a working teacher’s schedule

Courses and coaching will focus on topics such as:

  • Understanding the significance of students’ cultural and educational experiences to inform STEM teaching and learning;
  • Developing teacher leadership skills;
  • The roles of technology and inquiry-based instruction in STEM education; and
  • Engineering design.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Applicants must:

  • Be a certified Texas teacher in secondary math or science.
  • Have three years of teaching experience in math or science.
  • Work in a high-need school district.
  • Commit to conducting professional development at their campuses for four years after graduation.
  • Have strong content knowledge, a passion for STEM education and an interest in culturally responsive teaching.
  • Be U.S. citizens or nationals, or permanent resident aliens.

Application Process

Complete the UH graduate application online. The following items are included in the online application:

  • Official transcripts: You will see instructions within the application on how to submit your official transcript.
  • Names and email addresses of three individuals who will complete an online reference form.
  • GRE scores: The GRE is waived for spring, summer and fall 2022 applicants. There are no waiver requirements and all applicants are granted the waiver for the terms listed.
    • Waiver information is subject to change.
  • Write a personal statement about your goals and teaching philosophy.
  • Complete an interview if requested.
