Welcome to the CMS Basics Training Sampler Site
This is a Sample Department-Home-Type Page
The pages inside this sample site illustrate many of the common things you may want to work with in your own sites. Feel free to explore, edit, and publish; and see if you can get a sense of how various things may work for you, and for your site.
There are a number of different page asset types. Some page assets are designed to display to the public as a final webpage, once they are published. All these pages will have the default system name of "index". Other page-type assets are designed to be used for the development of a specific type of content, which can then be called into an "index" page to provide additional features. The called/'chosen' assets also need to be published out for the main "index" page to display them correctly. For a discussion of different page-type assets, please see the Infotech site.
Site Highlights:
This page itself is a Department Home type page. It uses a called/'chosen' Slideshow Feature which appears at the top of the content area, as well as various "widgets", such as the CNN RSS feed or the UH Twitter feed included below. In a similar way, you may also include a Facebook feed, or a Google Calendar feed on this type of home page. And the Department Home page can include a SPIFF row (aka a SPIFF List) as well - see the last row of items, right above the footer of this page.
Landing-type pages can also serve as "home" pages. They offer a wide variety of built-in layout options. Be sure to visit the Marcom site for more information about Landing-type page options. To explore editing a Landing-type page for yourself here in the training area, see the sample Landing Page provided.
Some called-in or features are designed to work specifically on either a Dept Home page or a Standard interior page. In addition to Slideshow Features, other page content features may include: Related Links; rotating Special Interest Features (SPIFFs); a Gallery of images; a Floating Palette Table of Contents Menu (TOC); Reusable External Link assets; a Google Calendar for your area or department.
Other page-type assets include a number of "specialized" type pages which are dedicated to a single purpose, such as building: a slideshow, a gallery, or even a custom header. These page-types are built separately, and then called into another page's content structure via a page-type Chooser linking tool. Generally speaking, both the calling page and the called page need be published out separately when first created, and/or if later either one is changed.
Meanwhile, you may also be interested in some miscellaneous content editing tips. See the Infotech site's: How To's for working on pages in the CMS. How To's include tips on working with HTML Tables or on applying Styles and Formatting using the WYSIWYG editor.
A Couple of Widgets:
Displayed below is information from a CNN RSS feed, and from the University of Houston Twitter account. These were created using specialized Content Widget Blocks attached to this page. The Blocks reside in the site's "_sample-assets/_blocks/" folder just like the "Contact Information" block also used on this page. The Blocks do not publish, but rather send instructions to the page on what to display. The Page using the Blocks must be Published to reflect any changes to the instructions.
