New research challenges previous test used to measure residual conscious perception

University of Houston Developmental Psychology Professor Bruno Breitmeyer co-authored "Revisiting the metacontrast dissociation: Comparing sensitivity across different measures and tasks," which was recently published in the February 2009 issue of The Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, volume 62.

For the article, Breitmeyer collaborated with Ulrich Ansorge, from the Institute of Cognitive Science at the Univesity of Osnabrueck in Germany, and with Stefanie I. Becker, from the University of Queensland, St. Lucia, in Australia.

The article challenges the metacontrast dissociation procedure's measurement of residual conscious perception and concludes that "the development of an exhaustive measure of conscious perception and the demonstration of the processing of unconscious visual input is not a one-step procedure."
