Speech, Language, and Hearing Mobile Unit
Description
The mission of the Speech, Language, and Hearing Mobile Unit (SLHU) is to offer mobile, top-tier resources to prevent, assess and treat communication disorders in residents across Houston. In addition, by providing opportunities for learning, discovery and engagement to a diverse population of UH students in a real-world setting, the SLHU will serve as a knowledge resource to Houston. By facilitating community engagement, the SLHU will help COMD build partnerships with other educational institutions, community organizations, government agencies and the private sector to serve Houston.
What the Speech, Language, Hearing Unit Offers
The SLHU offers clinical screenings and educational services at low or no cost.
Clinical Screenings:
The SLHU will offer screenings to both children and adults in the following areas:
- Hearing
- Speech
- Language
- Reading
- Cognition
Recommendations for follow-up with educational or medical services, including referrals will be provided with all screenings. Referrals to community agencies such as the University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic: A United Way agency or the Houston Aphasia Recovery Center may be given to the participating individuals.
Educational Services:
- Education about communication milestones
- Education about head injury and stroke prevention
- Parent trainings on language and reading
