The UH Communication Sciences and Disorders Alumni Association Presidents' Scholarship and Communication Disorders Alumni Association Scholarship are merit-based awards for continuing COMD MA students.

• Eligibility: All MA students who have completed at least 9 COMD graduate credit hours with a minimum 3.0 GPA
• Award amount: $500 - $2000; contingent on available funds
• Application deadline: September 30
• Award date: Following spring semester

This scholarship honors Dr. Genevieve Arnold who developed the University of Houston’s program in Communication Disorders in 1948.

Dr. Genevieve Arnold developed the UH Program in Communication Disorders over thirty years ago. She established an active Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic that was available to the public. She was responsible for graduating the first speech and language clinicians in the Houston area. She maintained close ties with the psychology department and the University of Houston Radio Station. Her legacy lives on in the strong Communication Disorders Department on the campus of the University of Houston.

This scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Margaret Cooper Crabtree. She was a pioneer in the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Dr. Crabtree earned her Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of Michigan and her Doctorate from the University of Houston. Her state certification in Speech Therapy was one of the first issued by the Texas Speech and Hearing Association.
 
She served as head of the Speech-Language Pathology Department of the Houston Independent School District from 1957 to 1972. She developed the Houston Test of Language Development, a language test for children, ages 6 months to 6 years.

Dr. Crabtree was honored by the Texas Speech and Hearing Association in 1972 for her outstanding contributions to the field of Speech-Language Pathology. Dr. Crabtree's friends and colleagues in the Texas Speech Language Hearing Foundation have initiated this scholarship in her honor.

• Eligibility: Students who successfully complete the first semester of the graduate program and express desire to work in the public schools after graduation.
• Award amount: $500
• Application deadline: November/December
• Award date: March of first year in the graduate program: award announced at the TSHA Annual Convention.

These scholarships, provided by the College of Liberal Arts & Social Science Dean’s Office, are designed for recruitment purposes to attract the best graduate students to the program. During the admissions process, each member of the committee reviews all applications for admission and ranks the applicants based on the following weighted criteria: Academic record (overall GPA and last 60 credit hours), a written personal statement and three letters of recommendation. Following the independent scoring, a consensus score is obtained for each applicant. Students are ranked hierarchically based on those scores, and the top applicants with the highest composite scores are targeted for recruitment which may include an interview.

• Award date: August of first semester in graduate program

The Beck Scholarships honor Drs. Jack and Tina Bangs.

Four recipients are identified each year. Recipients earn $4,000 for a 6-month commitment (January through June or July through December) to work 10 hours per week at a local Community Clinic. Reappointment can be made one time. Selection of awardees is based on academic and clinical skills. Fluency in Spanish is an advantage.

• Eligibility: Applicants must have completed at least one semester of clinic at the University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic.
• Award amount: $4,000
• Responsibilities: Recipient works 10 hours/week for 6 months in a local community clinic. If awarded to a 2nd year student, this placement partially fulfills the externship requirement
• Application deadline: February. Application consists of a letter of interest and resume. Selected individuals will be interviewed for the position.
• Award period: January-June or July-December.
