Bio

Robert Tierney is a philosopher whose work focuses primarily on moral psychology, philosophy of agency and philosophy of law. He has published articles on agent-regret and the irreplaceability of beloved persons and of cherished objects. Professor Tierney is continuing his research in each of these areas. In particular, he is developing a more general account of the moral psychology and normative basis for valuing persons and some objects as irreplaceable (i.e., non-fungible), expanding this general account to cover objects, structures and places of religious significance. In addition, Tierney is developing an account of the nature of vengeance and what distinguishes it from retribution. Tierney received his B.A. and J.D. from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in philosophy from Rice University.
