Fall 2012 Upper-Division Course Online

AAS 3356: Africana Thought & Philosophy

African American Studies will offer AAS 3356: Africana Thought & Philosophy as an online course for the fall 2012 semester. This marks the first time that AAS has offered one of its upper-division level courses in an exclusively online format. Prof. Elias Bongmba, the Harry and Hazel Chavanne Chair in Christian Theology and Professor of Religious Studies at Rice University, will be the instructor of record.

The course provides an introductory reading of African thought and philosophy. The goal of the course is to discuss the history of philosophy and philosophical ideas in Africa. In order to accomplish that goal, students will explore the history of the discipline in Africa, explore methodological approaches, and explore selected themes in philosophy discussed from an African perspective.
