Lunar New Year
  • Location: Worldwide
An annual 15 day festival that celebrates the start of the new year on the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar, which also incorporates an animal from the Chinese or other Asian zodiacs. Traditions include honoring deities and ancestors, exchanging red envelopes of money, feasts, lion and dragon dances, and firecrackers.

Senior Series: I'm Retired & I Need Purpose!

What we thought retirement would feel like does not necessarily match up with reality, especially as we age. Getting older doesn’t always mean slowing down. For many retirees, this is a time of exploration, adventure, and newfound friendships. As you define and redefine living in retirement, it is important to continue including the things that bring you joy and find rewarding ways to achieve a sense of purpose, gain meaning, and feel happier in life. This seminar is geared toward living life to the fullest.

College students and rising high school juniors and seniors applying for financial aid thru the Free Application for Federal Student Aid or FAFSA form can get help at the FAFSA Demystified Workshop. Counselors from the University of Houston and Wharton County Junior College will be on hand to clarify new changes meant to streamline the process.
West African Djembe Drumming

In celebration of Black History Month, the Joy of Djembe Drumming Ensemble will be performing West African djembe drumming and discussing the history and meaning behind the rhythms and music. The Joy of Djembe Drumming Ensemble is a group of Houston musicians who strive to share the joy of music.
Untold Stories of Black Life in Texas: Reframing Our Shared History

The truths of history in America are being threatened, but in regard to Black history, most of it has never even been told. The Fort Bend Museum invites you to journey through the injustices that formed early Black history and the extraordinary ways Black culture is being highlighted in Texas today.

Lantern Festival

A traditional festival that marks the end of the Chinese New Year celebrations. Traditions include children carrying paper lanterns at night, solving riddles and eating sticky glutinous rice balls.

Reel Talk: The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks

Reel Talk is a series of documentary screenings at University Branch Library with brief discussions of the films after they are shown. This month, we’re viewing The Rebellious Life of Mrs. Rosa Parks. This documentary provides a comprehensive and illuminating exploration of Rosa Parks' life, chronicling her pivotal role in the civil rights movement and revealing the depth of her activism beyond the iconic moment of refusing to give up her bus seat. It runs 1 hour and 36 minutes. It is rated PG.
