College Inducts 16 New Members into Mading Society

Oct. 11 Event Honors Individual Giving in Support of Pharmacy Education at UH

UH College of Pharmacy welcomed 16 new individual members into its Mading Society Oct. 11 at an event graciously hosted by UH President/UH System Chancellor Renu Khator and her husband, UH Engineering Professor Suresh Khator, at their Wortham House home.

The Mading Society was established in 1997 by UH College of Pharmacy to recognize individual and corporate/foundation donors committed to advancing clinical and research excellence in the Greater Houston Region, across the nation and around the globe.

The 2013 individual inductees were:

  • Evelyn Berkowitz ('54)
  • Vicki Blythe ('78)
  • Lourdes M. Cuellar ('73, '79)
  • Lynne Johnson and Galen Johnson ('65)
  • Susan Lake and Gene Lake
  • Kaye Luparello ('73) and Vincent Luparello ('73)
  • Marjorie Morgan and William Morgan ('63)
  • Jay (Richie) Ray II ('96)
  • Anne Rumsey and R. Louis Rumsey ('79)
  • Sarah Lake Wallace ('00) and David Wallace ('98)

"The college is fortunate to have alumni and friends such as this year's Mading Society inductees who understand the importance of supporting pharmacy education," said UHCOP Dean F. Lamar Pritchard, Ph.D. "Such support is critical to the college achieving its education and service missions to improve the quality of life for all Texans through safe, effective medication use and innovative patient care."

The Mading Society was named in memory of Cora and Reagan Webb Mading, the first major benefactors of the college. Mr. Mading was born in East Texas in 1887. He was a registered pharmacist and owned 12 drugstores, the largest independent drug store chain in Houston at the time. Upon his death in 1953, the Mading estate bequeathed $20,000 to the fledgling UHCOP. He was also known for his love of children and insisted that they be treated as courteously as any adult customer.

The Mading Society recognizes individual donors for lifetime giving of $10,000 and corporate/foundation donors for cumulative giving of $25,000.
