Attention 6th, 7th, and 8th graders! If you’ve ever wondered what college will be like, experience it firsthand this summer at the Honors College at the University of Houston. Preview college courses in various topics, taught by actual University faculty, including English literature, creative writing, engineering, and biology.

Class Descriptions

Becoming a better reader of literature makes you a better interpreter in general, making you aware of how some of the most important resources of language—imagery, musicality, figures of speech—work their magic. We will read texts the Honors College way and go beyond mere symbol hunting and plodding plot summary into much more interesting territory—the land between the lines. There we'll run instead of walk, and maybe even fly.

From genetics to physiology, the many branches of biology have much to tell us about what the human body is made up of, how it works, and how it is affected by what we eat, the air we breathe, and every other aspect of the world around us. Students will learn how important biology is to our everyday lives.

Building on the energetic work done in the literature class, we will make the turn from being good readers to creative writers. We will experiment with various literary forms and increase our confidence with some fun writing exercises. We will also practice the art of recitation—of reading our work, or the work of classic writers, out loud.

Students will be introduced to a number of basic principles in engineering, including demonstrations based on current research activities at the University of Houston. Opportunities will also be given for hands-on construction of simple communications systems that are a part of today’s wireless environment.
