Dr. Guillermo de los Reyes Heredia receives recognition for GLBT academic activism

Dr. Guillermo De Los Reyes Heredia

Dr. Guillermo de los Reyes Heredia, Associate Professor of Latin American Cultures and Literatures and Associate Director of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, was recently named the 2014 Michael Lynch Service Award recipient, a recognition presented by the GL/Q Caucus of the Modern Language Association.

The GL/Q Caucus for the Modern Languages is an allied organization of the Modern Language Association. The mission of the organization is to promote the study and dissemination of LGBT and queer studies, and to provide a space for support and camaraderie for scholars who engage in LGBTQ studies.

The Michael Lynch Service Award was designed to honor individuals, like Dr. Heredia, whose activism is rooted in academics. The type of work recognized includes supporting non-discrimination clauses in contracts; working to establish domestic partner benefits, increasing awareness of transgender issues in housing and health services, or other LGBT-friendly campus policies.

Dr. Heredia’s research interests include gender, sexuality, and queer theory, Latin American cultural studies, and policy studies. He is currently working on a book-length project titled, “El pecado nefando:” Rethinking Gender and Sexuality in Colonial Mexico.

He traveled to Chicago to receive the award during the MLA’s annual convention in January.
