Hobby Center Fellows front and center in Texas legislative session

New Hobby Center for Public Policy program pairs undergraduates with Texas legislators

Hobby Center Fellow group picture

Eight University of Houston students will get more than a bird’s-eye view of the next session of the Texas Legislature. They’ll be front and center, participating in many aspects of the legislative process as UH Hobby Fellows.

“I'm double majoring in political science and environmental science,” said student Estefani Jimenez. “I'm excited to be assigned to Rep. Ana Luna Hernandez’s office. She's an alum and went to the same high school as I did.”

The Hobby Fellows program debuts as the 83rd Texas legislative session begins. A program of the UH Hobby Center for Public Policy (HCPP), Hobby Fellows provides students internship opportunities in legislators’ offices during the session. Working full-time, the experience will provide students with knowledge of the legislative process by observation, participation, research and writing. They also will attend meetings and hearings, and meet with constituents and lobbyists.

“Texas is an incredibly large entity in terms of resources, but our state business is done within five months every two years,” said Renee Cross, associate director of the HCPP. “In legislators’ offices, you have to have all hands on deck, meaning our interns will have opportunities to do and learn a great many things.”

Among the offices hosting UH interns is that of State Rep. Ana Hernandez Luna. A UH alumna, Hernandez Luna worked as a government intern while completing her undergraduate degree. Her chief of staff Lesley Nelson, also an alum, served as an intern in both Houston and Austin.

“My experience as a government intern, while a student at UH, helped to solidify my decision to make public service a lifelong commitment,” Hernandez Luna said. “I am excited to be able to host a Hobby Fellow in my office this session so that they can have that same life-changing opportunity.”

Cross says it is appropriate that the program carry the name of former Lt. Gov. William P. Hobby.

“The entire Hobby family is iconic in the state of Texas and Houston,” Cross said. “But, particularly in political circles, Lt. Gov. Hobby was known for working across the aisle; working together to create legislation that would benefit Texas. I think that particularly in today’s political environment that is especially respected.”

Acceptance into the program is based on merit—a combination of grades, experience and writing ability. Additionally, candidates must have a demonstrated record of public service, either in other government internships, with community groups or on neighborhood projects. Students can earn up to 12 hours of credit hours in political science. The program is supported by private donations.

The Hobby Center for Public Policy has a history of creating public service professionals. District Court Judge Al Bennett and State Rep. Armando Walle were introduced to the public realm when working as government interns at UH. Countless key staff leaders at all levels of government in Houston, Austin and Washington have emerged from the HCPP programs. Cross says the experience has created a train of leaders.

“These bright, energetic, enthusiastic students enter a new arena and when they come back, they are so knowledgeable, confident and poised. It’s amazing how consistent that result is,” she said.

New year, better you

Texas Obesity Research Center offers 10 strategies for maintaining a healthy weight

New Year, better you

New Year resolutions quickly fade, as the excuses pile up. To help you keep your personal commitments to eat more healthy food and exercise more often, the Texas Obesity Research Center offers these strategies for staying the course.

  • Don’t despair. If you have fallen off the wagon, forgive yourself. And get back on again! If you lose yourself and eat more than you want, eat a little less the next day. It is never too late to take action.
  • Document the evidence. Write down what and how much you eat of everything. Writing things down helps you to stay in control and remember what you are eating and doing every day. Looking at your notes can be a helpful reminder for you to stay on track. Remember to include beverages. You can also write down your daily physical activities, too.
  • Keep on moving. Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity every day. This should make you sweat a little bit, like walking fast, but even vigorous housework can count. Take yourself sightseeing or plan an activity where you will be able to move around. Even window shopping is better than sitting on the couch. Daily physical activity significantly improves your body functioning, on a cellular level, and your body is better able to lose and avoid gaining weight.
  • Preempt the tempt. Avoid situations where you are going to be hungry and at risk for making high calorie choices. Eat a small snack every three hours. This will stop from letting the hunger get the best of you. The snack should include some protein, like a small piece of reduced calorie cheese or a small handful of nuts.
  • Tell a friend. Enlist the help and support of your friends and family. They may serve as a kind ear when you need to vent, or may have similar physical activity and eating goals as you. Either way, it is always better to have a friend on board.
  • Busy hands. Keep your hands and mind busy. After the holidays are a good time for writing thank you notes, putting holiday goodies away, and spending time with friends whom you may have missed during the holiday bustle. The key is to keep busy and not spend too much time thinking about eating.
  • Plan ahead. Anticipate and make a plan for what you will do in high risk situations. Decide whether you are going to decline the chocolate pecan torte, have a bite or have a piece. If you decide to have a piece, plan in advance to eat a little less of something else. Try to enjoy the company of friends and family away from the table to remove the visual cues of food and prevent mindless eating.
  • Talk yourself into it. You have talked yourself into plenty of things before, why should this be any different? Tell yourself you can do it. Every day, think to yourself, “I am doing great,” “I can stick to my plan,” “I am maintaining a healthy weight,” and “I can stay on track.”
  • Practice relaxing. Stress is a prime cause of overeating. Prioritize time to reflect and relax every day. This can be time spent doing something you love, meditating quietly, or taking a walk. Take time for yourself so that you can be the best you want to be throughout the year.
  • Keep it real. Be realistic with yourself. Don’t expect dramatic weight loss immediately--not a realistic goal. Stay on track, keep focused and make small sustainable steps toward your goal. Five pounds that are avoided are five fewer pounds that you will have to take off.

Moores School of Music celebrates 30th anniversary of International Piano Festival

Event runs Feb. 1 – 3 and features Abbey Simon, Inon Barnatan and Larissa Dedova

Age hasn’t slowed down the University of Houston’s International Piano Festival. This year, the celebrated festival turns 30, but it retains the spark that’s made it one of the city’s most anticipated musical events.

Just as the festival has maintained its musical energy, so has its founder UH distinguished professor of piano Abbey Simon, who turns 91 this year. Simon founded the festival in 1984 and continues to be one of its marquee performers. Each year, he and guest pianists deliver recitals and master classes at UH.

This year’s event runs Feb. 1 – 3 and will feature Simon, Inon Barnatan and Larissa Dedova. Recitals will be performed in the Moores Opera House, and master classes will be conducted in UH’s Dudley Recital Hall. Festival tickets can be purchased at the Moores Opera House box office or reserved by calling 713-743-3313. Prices are as follows:

  • Recitals only - $60, $35 for students and seniors
  • Recitals and master classes - $85, $45 for students and seniors
  • Single recitals - $25, $15 for students and seniors
  • Single master classes - $10, $5 for students and seniors
  • Artist conversations luncheon (12:30 p.m., Feb. 4) - $15

A child prodigy, Simon began playing the piano when he was 3 years old. He heard music on the radio, then replicated the sounds on a nearby piano. Since then, Simon has tirelessly worked to create music. Trained by virtuoso composer Josef Hofmann, Simon became one of the world’s top concert pianists. In 1977, he joined the faculty at UH and holds the title of Hugh Roy and Lillie Cranz Distinguished Professor of Music.

Barnatan was born in Tel Aviv and began playing piano at the age of three. At age 11, he made his orchestral debut. He studied under noted pianist/teacher Victor Derevianko and attended London’s Royal Academy of Music. In 2006, he moved to the U.S. and has performed with the Houston Symphony Orchestra and orchestras in Cleveland, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Barnatan also has taken his talents around the world and performed in Israel, the Netherlands, China, Canada and the United Kingdom. In 2006, he released a compact disc showcasing the works of Schubert, which met with praise from critics and classical music fans. For more details on Barnatan, visit his website.

Dedova is a professor at the University of Maryland’s School of Music. Outside of the university, she has performed in some of the world’s most esteemed concert halls including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Rome’s Teatro Ghiome, the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory and others. Her talents have earned top honors in international piano competitions such as the Bach International Competition in Leipzig, Germany and Pro Piano International Piano Competition in New York. In 1994, she was named the “Honored Artist of Russia.” Dedova has recorded several albums including a four-disc set “Complete Piano Music by Debussy” ( Centaur Records) in 2011. She is the first Russian pianist to record all of Debussy’s solo music for piano. To learn more about Dedova, visit her website.

CLASS staff member graduates with a 4.0 GPA and political science degree

Information Technology Analyst Joseph Lazzaro earned his B.A. while working full time

Joseph Lazzaro places his tongue firmly in his cheek when he says he’s the “perfect dinner guest.”

Emily Post and other etiquette experts strongly advise against discussing religion or politics at work or the dinner table. Lazzaro, who graduated in December with a bachelor’s degree in political science, a minor in religious studies and a 4.0 grade point average, loves controversial subjects with his meals.

When he isn’t grappling with politics or religion, Lazzaro can be found at his full time job as an Information Technology Analyst in the School of Art. Since March 2005, Lazzaro has been responsible for the computer labs and tech support for the faculty, staff and students in one of the College’s most creative departments.

“I really fell into I.T.,” said Lazzaro. “I began working for an internet company right out of high school and have been in this line of work ever since.”

In the summer of 2006, after cajoling from his wife Jennifer, Lazzaro decided to begin pursuing his bachelor’s degree.

“She pressured me to start,” he said. “But then I was hooked. I loved the process…learning, research, reading, and writing.”

He applied to UH through the Adult Admission program, which allows applicants to enroll in a non-degree status without submitting transcripts or test scores.

“I initially thought that I would get my degree in I.T.,” said Lazzaro. “But I quickly realized I was having more fun in my political science classes. I.T. is predictable; I didn’t find it as intellectually stimulating as studying the big problems in life discussed in political science or religious studies.”

For the next six years, Lazzaro worked full time and balanced between two and four classes per semester. He took advantage of the staff tuition scholarship which gave him three hours off per week to take classes. He also took classes online and in the evenings.

“There was some stress at times,” said Lazzaro. “But because I was older, I think I had a different perspective. I took classes I was interested in and had a connection to. My courses never felt like work.”

Lazzaro is especially appreciative to Dr. Gregory Weiher, professor of political science, who served as a mentor to him during his undergraduate work.

“Students like Joseph are among the greatest rewards of teaching,” said Dr. Weiher. “I am fond of just about all of my students, but Joseph is one of those students with whom you have a real conversation about ideas, and about their consequences. You don’t really teach a student like Joseph.  In fact, you can’t stop him from learning.  It is a great pleasure to participate in that learning with him.”

Now that graduation is behind him, Lazzaro is taking his time to decide on the right graduate program for him. He is especially interested in understanding religion and how it affects political expectations.

“My areas of interest are a bit unusual,” admits Lazzaro. “So I want to find a program with great faculty that I want to work with.”

“Complicatedly multi-disciplined” student finds research passion in Bosnia

Diane Stout studies the impact of personal stories on public policy

Diane_Stout

Diane Stout’s trip abroad last summer quickly morphed into a research study that continued long after she returned to Houston. Stout, along with three other University of Houston students, traveled to Bosnia for 14 days to learn about the Bosnian genocide. By the end of her experience, Stout had found a subject area that she wanted to research in-depth.

“I stayed with three other international students in a house and I spent my days at lectures and debates over the politics, the culture and the aftermath of the genocide,” said Stout. “The entire trip was a pivotal point in my life. I came back from this amazing trip and realized that I really wanted to research the power of appeals.”

She’s dissecting how hearing a personal story affects a person’s opinion of government intervention into another country's civil conflict - and if that opinion changes if the listener is made aware of the statistics surrounding that conflict.”

The trip was part of a program called Summer University and was led by Dr. Mient Jan Faber, a visiting scholar to the UH Honors College. Once she returned from Bosnia, Dr. Ryan Kennedy, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the College of Liberal Arts and Social Science, helped Stout direct her thoughts into a feasible research project.

“I am researching the correlation between personal narratives of wars and the statistical numbers related to war (such as the number of bodies or tragedies), and how that affects public opinion toward U.S. involvement in the conflict,” said Stout. “For example, does a personal story generate more interest and cultivate people to want an increased U.S. involvement in the situation? Does that entail monetary involvement, troops on the ground, or bombs? I specifically want to look at the Bosnian War and the Srebrenica genocide because this conflict occurred in recent history and I can look at why the U.S. government did not act until it did.”

According to Dr. Kennedy, Diane has been a very enthusiastic researcher and student. Over the past several months she has had the opportunity to learn and utilize research tools that will be fundamental in her future studies.

“Her work is very exciting and pertinent to U.S. public policy and we are both excited to see the results,” said Dr. Kennedy. “She has gone well beyond expectations, especially so early in her college career, and I am excited to see what she will do in the future.”

Stout says her academic interests have made her “complicatedly multi-disciplined.” She got the opportunity to present her findings to faculty, staff and fellow students during Undergraduate Research Day in October. Through this process she learned something beyond what her studies taught her – to allow her interests to drive her research.

“The best advice I received was to first, find your passion and then figure out how to approach it with a logical and unbiased method to test your question or idea,” said Stout. “Never be afraid to come to your professors, boss, or elder for help and guidance.”
