CLASS 2011 graduates

College's spring commencement ceremony held May 13, 2011

A pictorial review of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences commencement ceremony

Photo galleries from 2011 Commencement ceremonies are now being added to this website as they become available. Please continue to check back for updates.

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences kicked off the University of Houston's 77th Commencement exercises with a graduation ceremony on Friday, May 13, 2011 in Hofheinz Pavilion.

As the university's largest college, CLASS conferred 47 doctoral degrees, 222 master's degrees and 1,221 bachelor's degrees. The college's total of 1,490 graduates represents more than a third of the 3,885 students receiving UH degrees in 8 commencement ceremonies on Friday and Saturday.

"You are not just graduating today, you are making history," President Renu Khator said during the Friday morning celebration. "When you walk across this stage, you will be the first graduating class from the newest Tier One university in the nation."

She reminded the assembled graduates and their loved ones that in January, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching bestowed its highest ranking of Tier One on UH. That recognition was followed in March with the Princeton Review including UH for the first time on its annual list of the "Best Colleges in America."

"Let me assure you that you are the best prepared, best educated, and best trained class this university has ever produced, and now you have a Tier One degree to prove it," she said.

CLASS Dean John W. Roberts echoed President Khator's sentiments in his well wishes for the college's graduates.

"All of us in CLASS are delighted by the accomplishments of these students whom we have advised, taught, and mentored to this proud moment," he said. "We wish them the very best as they begin a new phase in their lives."

Among those sharing the platform with the president and dean and congratulating students as they walked across the stage were: University of Houston System Board of Regents Chairwoman Carroll Robertson Ray, Regent Nandita Berry, Regent Jarvis Hollingsworth, Regent Mica Mosbacher, Provost John Antel, Student Government Association Immediate Past President Prince Wilson and many CLASS department chairs and program directors.

During the commencement, the President's Medallion for exceptional contributions to UH by an individual or an organization was awarded to Ricahrd Wainerdi, the president and chief executive officer of the Texas Medical Center. He championed UH's admittance as a full member of the Texas Medical Center.

President Khator also bestowed the university's highest honor – the doctoral degree, honoris causa, or honorary degree – on Walter Kase during the CLASS ceremony.

Ira Colby, Dean of the Graduate College of Social Work introduced Mr. Kase as a Holocaust survivor at age 15 who became a life-long advocate for respect and tolerance. An honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters was conferred on Mr. Kase.

Blaffer Art Museum heads to the Venice Biennale

Anton-Ginzburg

The Blaffer sponsoring “At the Back of the North Wind” by Anton Ginzburg in Italy

“Imagine a place on Earth devoid of seasonal change and natural disaster, whose inhabitants were free of pestilence, aging, and war.”

If your mind refuses to stretch wide enough to envision that space, don’t worry. Visual artist Anton Ginzburg has done the heavy thinking for you.

In the description of his exhibit At the Back of the North Wind, the source of the quote above, Ginzburg is positioned as a modern-day explorer of Hyperborea, “a realm lying north of the winter territories, where the sun never set and whose landscape and waters were lush, fertile, and wild.”

Hyperborea was first described by Homer, Hesoid, Herodotus and other ancient Greeks and associated with the god Apollo. Now, at the 54th International Art Exhibition at la Biennale di Benezia, a Russian American contemporary artist will unveil his imagined vision of the artifacts and remnants of an ancient myth that teaches much about modern times.

The installation of photographs, drawings, sculpture and film is co-presented by Blaffer Art Museum and Flo Art Fund with initial organizational support provided by Artpace San Antonio. Curated by Matthew J.W. Drutt, the show was chosen as an official participant in La Biennale di Venezia’s Collateral Program and will be on view from June 3 to November 27 at the Palazzo Bollani.

“We are thrilled to participate in the Venice Biennial," said Claudia Schmuckli, director of the Blaffer. "Over a century after its inception, it is still one of the most important cultural events in the world and we are very proud to be a part of it. The international exposure is invaluable in view of raising awareness for the museum's exhibitions and programs."

The Venice Biennial, which was established in 1895, has an attendance of more than 370,000 visitors. "We can only dream of reaching that kind of audience here on campus," adds Schmuckli.

“The contemporary art world is global by nature,” said Schmuckli, who earned her master of arts degree in art history from the Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany. "We consistently work with institutions nationally and internationally to broaden the museum's reach. Over the past two years alone, we have co-published three exhibitions catalogs in collaboration with museums in Switzerland, Germany and the UK."

Most exhibitions organized by Blaffer Art Museum travel to museums nationally, but only one has made the international leap before – Chuck Close Prints: Process and Collaboration traveled to Seoul, Korea in 2008.

At the Back of the North Wind was organized for presentation in the Biennial. Following its Venetian debut, Schmuckli plans to bring the project to the University of Houston and present it in the context of FotoFest 2012 which will focus on Russia.

“Blaffer is dedicated to creating defining moments in an artist’s career,” said Schmuckli. "I think it's fair to say that being included in the Venice Biennial is such a moment for anyone, but especially for a young emerging artist like Anton Ginzburg."

Bold and beautiful word play at emerging writers’ conference

Conference audience

Third annual Boldface conference organized by English Department undergraduates

How does an unpublished writer get better at the craft so she can get published if just about every writing conference is for established writers?

That’s the dilemma creative writing undergraduate students put to their English Department advisers and got back an unexpected answer: fix the problem.

So the student staff of Glass Mountain magazine, the undergraduate literary journal, created and organized Boldface, a writing conference for emerging writers.

“The goal of Boldface is to prepare students for what comes after graduation, whether pursuing an MFA or to be published,” said Zack Bean, the magazine’s graduate advisor and an English Department doctoral candidate. “We want the students to leave the workshops and the University of Houston with knowledge of their craft.”

Now in its third year, Boldface is a week-long conference that provides writing workshops on poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction to undergraduate students from all over the country. Each workshop is fashioned after graduate courses and, because of their smaller size, provides more focus and attention to each writer and their work.

“Having three-hour workshops every day was exactly what I needed,” said creative writing senior Robert Welch. “The workshops are smaller in size, more intensive, and it definitely affected my views of writing as a professional choice.” He’s decided to pursue writing as a full-time career.

The workshops are led by MFA and PhD candidates of the Department of English’s nationally-recognized creative writing program. This year, writers will also have the opportunity to work one-on-one with three established writers who each earned their Ph.D.s in Literature and Creative Writing from UH:

  • David Maclean, nonfiction writer whose book of personal essays, The Answer to the Riddle is Me, is forthcoming from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
  • Darin Ciccotelli, a poet who has had poems published in Colorado Review, Denver Quarterly, Hayden’s Ferry Review and Spinning Jenny, among other publications.
  • Aaron Reynolds, a novelist whose stories and essays have appeared in Willow Springs, Third Coast, Sonora Review, Laurel Review, and Gulf Coast.

The conference shares more than advice on writing and how to get published. There are significant discussions about what undergraduate writers can do to prepare themselves to be admitted to graduate programs for creative writing. Readings and craft talks are scattered throughout the day, as well as meet and talks with visiting authors and off-campus evening events in the evenings.

“Classes are structured to simulate graduate seminars; students have access to the MFA students and PhD candidates,” said Zack Bean, PhD candidate and one of the instructors. “Workshops aim to help the emerging writers get a step closer to publication or the next level in their craft.”

This year, conference attendees paid $125 to attend the conference’s writing workshops, May 23 -28. There was an additional charge for on-campus residency, if they elected to stay in the UH dorms. Nearly 100 students from universities across Texas attended.

Conference organizers are now seeking national recognition for Boldface. Some represented the conference, magazine and the creative writing program at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs conference this year.

“We cannot guarantee publication for anyone, but we help them expand knowledge of their craft, which in turn helps the writers dedicate time to becoming better writers,” Bean said.
