Online Writing Consultations
Online Writing Consultations are 60-minute, individual, audio-enabled appointments that allow all UH students to receive writing support from any location that offers internet access. These interactions are designed to help you create an achievable plan to improve your own writing at any stage of your writing process.
During an Online Writing Consultation, students meet with one of our writing consultants in a virtual space within the Writing Center’s online scheduler, WCOnline. In this space, the student and writing consultant can use audio and chat features, as well as a shared screen, to engage in a real-time (live) discussion about any type of writing task - papers for class, resumes, scholarship essays, lab reports, and others. Since online consultations require students’ active participation, you will need access to a quiet space, reliable internet connection, and, preferably, a microphone on your computer or tablet for these interactions.
As with face-to-face consultations, our consultants will talk with you about your writing concerns, suggest solutions to writing challenges, and help create a manageable plan to successfully complete assignments. Whether you are just starting the assignment or revising a finished rough draft, consultants can help you with topics such as analyzing class assignment guidelines, creating an outline, finding and incorporating sources, organizing and connecting points within a paper, and revising your writing to make it more clear and understandable.
Consultations are collaborative, which means that the student and consultant will interact throughout the entire appointment in an active dialogue about potential revisions to current and future drafts. Writing consultants provide feedback to grammar concerns as they inhibit clear communication, however consultants do not line edit papers.
Students can book an online consultation through WCOnline by selecting the “Online Writing Consultation” schedule. Consultations should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, if possible, and can be scheduled up to 14 days beforehand. Online Writing Consultations take place in a virtual space within the Writing Center’s online scheduler, WCOnline, and can be accessed at the time of the consultation by clicking on the consultation and then selecting “Start or join online consultation” in the resulting pop-up window.
