Graduate Writing Consultations

If you are a graduate student or an undergraduate working on an advanced assignment, you can receive support for your writing in 60-minute individual Graduate Writing Consultations. These interactions can occur face-to-face or online and are designed to help you to produce graduate-level writing and receive feedback and create an achievable plan for improvement at any stage of your writing process.

During a Graduate Writing Consultation, the writing consultant will talk with you about your writing concerns, suggest solutions to writing challenges, and help create a manageable plan to successfully complete assignments or tasks. Graduate Writing Consultations are available to graduate students from all disciplines and to undergraduates working on graduate-level writing such as a thesis or application materials for graduate school.  You can meet with a consultant whether you are just starting an assignment, are revising a finished draft, or are at any point in between. To ensure that you receive feedback appropriate to your needs, consultations require a collaborative interaction between you and your consultant that includes an active dialogue about potential revisions to current and future drafts. Writing consultants provide feedback to grammar concerns as they inhibit clear communication, however consultants do not line edit papers and cannot receive papers through email to edit and return.

Students can book a graduate consultation through  WCOnline by selecting the “Graduate Writing Consultation” schedule. To ensure availability for all students, graduate consultations are limited to one appointment per week for each student. Consultations should be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance, if possible, and can be scheduled up to 14 days beforehand. If students need to book same-day consultations or cannot find availability, they should call (713)743-3016 or email  writingcenter@uh.edu.

During the scheduling process, students can select a face-to-face or online consultation. Face-to-face Graduate Writing Consultations take place in room 234 of the Classroom and Business Building (CBB). Online Graduate Writing Consultations take place in a virtual space within the Writing Center’s online scheduler, WCOnline, and can be accessed at the time of the consultation by clicking on the consultation and then selecting “Start or join online consultation” in the resulting pop-up window. The videos below provide more detailed information about how to schedule and access consultations online, as well as how to attach a file.

If you have further questions about Graduate Writing Consultations, including requests for regularly scheduled consultations or additional time, contact John Ebersole, the Writing Center’s Associate Director, at jieberso@central.uh.edu or (713)743-0269.
