CAM Students Receive Awards at International Conference on Photovoltaics

Mehrotra and Vijaya Work with Prof. Alex Freundlich

Akhil Mehrotra & B.J. Stanbery
CAM graduate student, Akhil Mehrotra, accepts the Best Student Oral Presentation Award from the IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference chairman, B.J. Stanbery.
Akhil Mehrotra and Gopi Vijaya, Ph.D. students doing research in the University of Houston’s Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), received awards at the 38th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference in Austin, Texas. Professor Alex Freundlich of CAM is their advisor.

Mehrotra, a third-year Ph.D. student in electrical engineering, received the Best Student Oral Presentation Award. His winning presentation was titled “Superior Radiation and Dislocation Tolerance of IMM Space Solar Cells.”

Vijaya, a third-year Ph.D. student in physics, was a finalist in the Fundamentals and New Concepts for Future Technologies session. His presentation covered “Multijunction Solar Cell with Dilute Nitride Cascaded Quantum Wells Design.” Vijaya’s research focuses on quantum nanostructure in photovoltaics.

Both students are Quantum Energy and Sustainable Solar Technologies (QESST) Scholars. QESST is an NSF/Department of Energy-sponsored research consortium led by Arizona State University. Freundlich, the head of the photovoltaic group at CAM, is a member of the consortium.
