The Meet and Greet details:
When: Friday, 3/06/2020 @1:00—4:00 p.m.
Where: 232 PGH
What is the Meet and Greet?: This event is for all Undergraduate Math Majors, including Mathematical Biology,
                              Math Graduate students, Departmental Faculty and Staff. The purpose of this social
                              is to create a pleasant and comfortable environment among faculty and students.
This year the Meet and Greet will be held in conjunction with the Pi Day Celebration event, hosted by our UH SIAM and UH AMS organizations.
We will potentially have two speakers that will present at this event (1:00—2:00 p.m.). Some topics that may be discussed include:
- Which steps were taken to acquire their current positions?
 - What was their process like and what was involved in their preparation to find a position?
 - Which opportunities did they take advantage of that proved invaluable during the application process.
 - Perspectives on “life beyond the degree”
 
SPEAKERS:
(1:00—1:25 p.m.) Dr. Casey Douglas  is a Math Faculty member at the University of Houston. He received his B.A. in Mathematics
                                    and English at Southwestern University. He received his M.A. and Ph.D in Mathematics
                                    at Rice University. His areas of research interest include: Minimal Surfaces, Differential
                                    Geometry, Teichmüller Theory, Complex Analysis, Optical Engineering, Catadioptric
                                    Sensor Design. 
Casey’s talk will be titled: " Wobbly, Twisted, Mirrored Pi (a journey through math and Indiana's redemption)”
Description: This brief talk is all about comparing a circle's circumference to its diameter.
                                    You may think you've heard all there is to say about this number called Pi, but even
                                    the experts are wrong. Estimates for this number are ongoing and represent a multi-generational,
                                    mutli-cultural effort; unconventional wisdom once held that Pi = 3.2; and modern day
                                    geometers understand that this number can in fact, change its value, being as little
                                    as 3 and as high as 4. In addition to addressing all of these views, this talk will
                                    show how all of these views are incomplete or downright wrong.
1:25—1:30 p.m. intermission
(1:30—1:55 p.m.) Dr. Cedric Kouam is the Director of North America Market Operations for EDP Renewables, a global leader in the renewable energy sector and the world’s fourth-largest wind
                              energy producer. In his current role, he oversees all scheduling, hedging, and trading
                              activities across all North America electricity markets, and is responsible for optimizing
                              revenues from a growing portfolio of renewable power resources. He joined EDP Renewables
                              North America (formerly Horizon Wind Energy) in 2008 as a Senior Structuring Analyst,
                              responsible for structuring complex energy transaction across different US power markets,
                              analyzing the risk and return relationships within an expanding wind energy portfolio,
                              and recommending strategies to manage risk and enhance returns.
Prior to joining EDP Renewables, Cedric worked as in Instructional Assistant for University
                              of Houston’s Mathematics department for three years, conducting recitations, grading,
                              and tutoring for a wide range of courses including Linear Algebra, Calculus I, II,
                              and III, Differential Equations, and Probability & Statistics.
A native of Cameroon in Central Africa, Cedric holds a Bachelor of Sciences in Mathematics
                              with a minor in Computer Science from the University of Buea, Cameroon. He obtained his Masters of Sciences in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Mathematics
                              from the University of Houston, where his research focused on financial derivatives
                              pricing with emphasis on commodities markets.
(2:00—2:10 p.m.) We will be recognizing our Spring 2020 Benner Scholarship, Grover Scholarship, and Mathematics Undergraduate Scholarship.
(2:10—2:25 p.m.) Afterward we will have a PME Induction ceremony for new members!
