Scholarships, Fellowship & Awards
DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
FELLOWSHIPS, SCHOLARSHIPS, AND AWARDS
Jay K. Kochi Graduate Fellowship, Ronald G. Page Fellowship for Excellence in Graduate Chemical Research, and C. James Bushman Graduate Fellowship
These awards are intended for graduate students studying for their Ph.D. in chemistry who are conducting truly outstanding chemical research as verified by their Ph.D. advisor and documented by having publications in high-impact peer-reviewed journals. The Department of Chemistry Graduate Committee will select the fellowship winners based solely on merit and determine which fellowship is appropriate for a recipient. To receive a fellowship, the student must be a current full-time graduate student (i.e., registered for ≥9 credit hours in the spring semester), have passed the Oral Progress Exam at the Ph.D. level, and have not applied for graduation at the time the fellowship application is submitted. A student cannot receive both a Kochi Fellowship and Page Fellowship during his/her graduate studies nor can a student receive a Kochi, Page, or Bushman Fellowship more than once. A student who is awarded a Bushman Fellowship may apply in subsequent years to compete for Kochi and Page Fellowships.
The Department of Chemistry Graduate Committee will determine the number and monetary value of the awards based on the nominees and funds in the endowments. The number and value of the awards will change yearly.
To apply, the student’s Ph.D. advisor should submit an application package by the last Friday in March as a single PDF document to the Graduate Chair of Chemistry (currently, Professor Shiv Halasyamani) via email with the subject line “Graduate Fellowship Application” that includes the following information in order (a separate application is required for each student):
- Cover sheet with the following information
- Full name of student applicant
- Student UH ID number
- Year student entered UH graduate program
- Name of Ph.D. Advisor(s)
- Anticipated year of graduation
- A maximum one-page 12-point-font narrative by the student describing his/her research at UH.
- Student applicant’s full CV with complete publication list noting publications from work performed at UH.
- Student’s unofficial UH transcript
- Letter of support by the Ph.D. advisor; if there is more than one applicant from the advisor’s research group, the letter should include a ranking of the applicants.
- Full copies of each published, in-press, and submitted paper from work performed at UH (only). If there are student co-authors besides the applicant, or postdoctoral researcher co-authors, a cover sheet for the publication should be included that briefly describes the specific contribution of the applicant to the research paper.
These awards are intended for graduate students in the Department of Chemistry who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to teaching undergraduate students in chemistry laboratories at UH. The Department of Chemistry Ad Hoc Teaching Assistant Awards Committee, which is appointed by the Chair of Chemistry and includes at minimum the three undergraduate chemistry laboratory coordinators, will select the award winners based solely on merit, including student evaluations and lab coordinator recommendations. To receive an award, the student must be a current full-time graduate student (i.e., registered for ≥9 credit hours in the spring semester) and have a minimum UH GPA ≥ 3.0. No application is necessary.
Dr. James Cox Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship
These awards are intended for B.S. chemistry majors who have an interest in pursuing a graduate degree in chemistry or chemical physics. The Department of Chemistry Ad Hoc Undergraduate Awards Committee, which is appointed by the Chair of Chemistry, will select the award winners. For scholarship consideration, an applicant must meet the following criteria: 1) be a full-time undergraduate B.S. chemistry major with at least 6 credits in chemistry completed at the UH Main Campus, 2) have a GPA > 3.5, and 3) demonstrate financial need. The award selection committee will consider an applicant’s overall academic record, personal statement, and research experience (if any). A strong preference will be given to students currently performing undergraduate research in a professor’s lab in the Department of Chemistry. The scholarship is renewable; a new application must be submitted to be considered for a renewal.
How to Apply: Submit a single PDF document to agczader@Central.UH.EDU with “Undergraduate Scholarship” in the subject field that includes the following information in order:
- A Cover Sheet giving the candidate’s full name, UH ID number, and official UH email address.
- A Personal Statement (500 words maximum) that describes how the candidate will use the B.S. degree in chemistry to accomplish career goals.
- If the candidate is performing undergraduate research, include a separate brief description (500 words maximum) describing the research and its influence, if any, on defining career goals.
- A complete CV.
- An unofficial UH transcript.
Deadline for Submission: April 15
Awards for Classroom Performance by Chemistry Majors

The Department of Chemistry Ad Hoc Undergraduate Awards Committee, which is appointed by the Chair of Chemistry, will select the award winners. To be eligible, a student must have maintained a minimum GPA of B+ over at least 12 hours per semester of courses that are to be applied to the requirements for the UH B.S. degree in chemistry. The awards are presented each year at the end of the spring semester. Students may receive each award only once. No application is necessary. The list of awards are as follows:
- Outstanding Performance in the Courses Fundamentals of Chemistry I and II. Criteria: Both semesters of Fundamentals of Chemistry must have been completed at the UH Main Campus. Amount: $1350
- Outstanding Performance in the Courses Organic Chemistry I and II. Criteria: Both semesters of Organic Chemistry must have been completed at the UH Main Campus. Amount: $1350
- Outstanding Performance in 3000 and/or 4000-Level Chemistry Courses. Criteria: A minimum of two 3000 and/or 4000-level courses must have been completed on the UH Main Campus. Amount: $1350
