Qatar Charity, in partnership with the University of Houston-Clear Lake Diplomacy Institute, is making food plentiful for the University of Houston community ahead of Thanksgiving. Approximately 500 boxes of nonperishable food items purchased from the Houston Food Bank have been donated to the University of Houston.

The 30-pound boxes will be distributed to the UH community during a drive-through event in the southwest parking lot of TDECU Stadium on Nov. 17 from 2-6 p.m. UH faculty, staff and students are encouraged to pick up a box of food. Boxes are available to all members of the UH community, regardless of individual need, and will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Participants will be asked to show a UH CougarCard or other university-issued identification in order receive a box.

To pick up a box of food, faculty, staff and students can enter the TDECU Stadium parking lot through the entrance on Cougar Place, sign in and a staff member will place a box in your vehicle. A walk-up option is available for individuals without transportation.

“We are proud to work with Qatar Charity to help students and community members in need during such difficult times,” said Gigi Do, UH-Clear Lake associate vice president of global learning and strategy.

This is the fourth food box distribution effort led by the UH-Clear Lake’s Diplomacy Institute and funded by a $200,000 gift from Qatar Charity. The three other universities within the UH System— UH-Clear Lake, University of Houston-Downtown and University of Houston-Victoria— have all hosted distributions this fall. The UH event is being coordinated by UH Wellness, which manages the UH Cougar Cupboard. The cupboard is available to all enrolled undergraduate or graduate students who may need access to additional food.

Another 150 boxes of food will be used to directly serve UH students in need. The food will restock the shelves of the UH Cougar Cupboard and PEEPS pantry.

One of Qatar Charity’s main missions is to offer aid and support to people in need all over the world, according to Edmund “Butch” Herod, assistant vice president of the Diplomacy Institute at UH-Clear Lake.

“The Diplomacy Institute and Qatar Charity are committed to the advancement of humanitarian diplomacy, and we appreciate this new partnership to support our community,” he said.
