UH Moment: Lens Turns Smartphone Into Microscope

Lens Can Achieve 120X Magnification

Researchers at the University of Houston are turning your smartphone into a microscope.

Assistant Professor Wei Chuan Shih and his students have created a lens that attaches to a smartphone camera and can achieve the same magnification as a regular commercial microscope.

“It is very comparable and a lot cheaper. It is much more versatile,” said Yulong Sung, a UH doctoral candidate who worked on the project. “You can just put it on your phone and go to the sample instead of bringing the sample to you.”

“The application is only limited by your imagination of how to use it,” Shih said.
