As chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, Nancy Sutley has been credited with adding a green attitude to the White House. Soon, she will bring her insights on sustainability and environmental issues to the University of Houston.
Sutley will visit the University of Houston’s Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture at 1:30 p.m., June 28 for a roundtable discussion with faculty and students and to observe presentations on projects driven by the college’s UH Green Building Components program. This event will take place in the college’s third-floor studios. This event is open to the media.
Among the items to be showcased during Sutley’s visit are:
- Solar-Powered Adaptive Container for Everyone (SPACE): recycled shipping containers equipped with solar generators
- GroPOD: a raised bed, modular gardening system that can easily be transported and used anywhere
- Recompute: a recyclable cardboard personal computer platform
- workSPACE: modular, sustainably manufactured creative workspace furniture
Sutley serves as the principal environmental policy adviser to President Barack Obama. Prior to this role, Sutley was the deputy mayor for energy and environment for the city of Los Angeles. She represented Los Angeles on the board of directors for the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and served on the California State Water Resources Control Board from 2003 - 2005. Sutley also worked for California Gov. Gray Davis as energy adviser, managing state and federal regulations, legislative affairs, finances and press relations. She served as deputy secretary for policy and intergovernmental relations in the California Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from 1999 - 2003. She advised on water and air pollution policy, and established budget and legislative priorities. During the administration of President Bill Clinton, Sutley worked for the EPA as a senior policy adviser to the regional administrator in San Francisco and special assistant to the administrator in Washington, D.C.
