WOODWINDS
Distinctive. Creative. Transformative.
An acclaimed artist faculty, a career-focused curriculum, and abundant student performance opportunities.

The internationally recognized faculty of the Moores School of Music's Woodwind Area
offers a comprehensive musical learning experience through progressive curricula tailored
to support our students’ career goals.
The Woodwind Area provides specialized instruction that addresses the unique needs
of each instrument. In addition to weekly lessons, students participate and perform
in weekly studio classes, learn about stage presence, develop practice methods, prepare
for auditions, and share musical ideas with their peers. A variety of performance
opportunities, including the Wind Ensemble and concert bands, the Symphony Orchestra,
the AURA Contemporary Ensemble, jazz ensembles, chamber ensembles, and the Spirit of Houston Marching Band, enable students to cultivate advanced ensemble skills essential for successful careers
as music educators and performers.
The Woodwind Area also offers students the chance to perform in the UH Clarinet Choir
and the UH Flute Choir, both of which provide opportunities to refine skills on their
primary instruments as well as develop new auxiliary instrument skills. Additionally,
oboe and bassoon students learn the art of reed-making firsthand under the guidance
of their professors, using reed-making equipment provided by MSM.
Current and former students have achieved success in major instrumental competitions
and have secured academic appointments and professional performing positions in orchestras,
premiere military bands, wind symphonies, and prestigious graduate programs. Our alumni
in instrumental music education enjoy significant success in teaching positions at
all levels.
