Positioned at the intersection of the visual arts, performance, music, visual and media studies and design, School of Art students enjoy world-class resources and learn from renowned faculty at the University of Houston. Our Master of Fine Arts program enables students to advance their creative practice, embedded in the cultural epicenter of Houston, and engage with the supportive academic community that is the foundation of our graduate studies. Our program prepares artists for a life of engaged studio and civic practice which reflects a healthy balance of production, inquiry and cross discipline collaborations. Through a concentration in design, interdisciplinary practices and emerging forms, painting, photography and digital media or sculpture, graduate students broaden their perspective with cross disciplinary studies and the world at large.

School of Art Application Procedures for MFA Degree


Application Deadline

The priority deadline for domestic and international applicants is January 15th for fall admission. Applications received after that date will be considered if space is available.

Domestic and International Applicants: Basic Admission Requirements

  • BA, BFA or BS in any field from a US accredited institution with a minimum of 3.0 (B) GPA earned in the last 60 hours of coursework.
  • A portfolio of work completed in the applicant’s major area of concentration and a statement of intent. The School of Art evaluates and admits MFA candidates primarily on the basis of the applicant’s portfolio and statement.

International Applicants: Additional Requirements

  • TOEFL Score

Please note: Applicants to the MFA program must complete two separate and equally important applications.

The University of Houston Graduate School application is required by the UH Graduate School and does not allow applicants to upload their additional documents (references, resume, foreign language proficiency, letter and writing sample); the Kathrine G. McGovern College of the Arts application is required by the School of Art and does allow for applicants to upload these documents. Both applications must be complete for successful application to the MA program. Complete the University of Houston Graduate School application form. Complete the Kathrine G.   • Submission Checklist

    • One official transcript from each college or university attended since high school.
    • The names and email addresses of 3 people to serve as your references. At least one of these should be familiar with your work in your area of concentration.
    • A brief statement of intent expressing your reasons for pursuing graduate study in your area of interest. Indicate on the statement the concentration to which you are applying. Upload this statement as a PDF.
    • A resume or CV as a PDF.
    • A portfolio of work. Portfolios should represent your most recent and consistent work, with a minimum of twenty examples of original work. See below: School of Art Portfolio Requirments by Program.
  • Portfolio Requirements

    • Twenty examples of current work submitted as a single PDF. Video and multimedia work are optional and may be uploaded separately.
    • URLs of online work (Vimeo, YouTube, websites) submitted as a PDF.
    • A numbered list of portfolio work with the following information submitted as a PDF:
      • Project title
      • Project URL if necessary
      • Project goals
      • Brief project description
      • Date completed
    • Twenty examples of current work submitted as a single PDF. Video and multimedia work are optional and may be uploaded separately.
    • URLs of online work (Vimeo, YouTube, websites) submitted as a PDF.
    • A numbered list of portfolio work with the following information submitted as a PDF:
