Moores School of Music’s Concert Chorale Invited to Sing at Nationwide Conferences

Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, director of choral studies, leads UH choir to two high-profile performances.

The University of Houston’s College of the Arts (CotA) is home to the University’s award-winning Concert Chorale, a vocal ensemble composed primarily of undergraduate students in the Moores School of Music (MSM). Under the leadership of Dr. Betsy Cook Weber, professor of music and director of choral studies, the Concert Chorale has won numerous awards and risen to international acclaim. This spring, the ensemble will bring its talents to two of the country’s most esteemed conferences, the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) convention and the national convention of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) conference in Minneapolis.

This is the fifth time that UH has been invited to perform at TMEA, the world’s largest convention of its kind. Spanning four days in February, TMEA offers music educators, college and high school students, and musicians from around the world professional workshops, clinics, live performances and networking opportunities.

“It’s a wonderful opportunity that gives our students significant exposure,” said Dr. Weber.

Following the TMEA convention in March, the Concert Chorale will perform for choral directors from across the nation at the ACDA conference. This is the choir’s second invitation to the highly prestigious event, and UH is one of only five collegiate choirs performing this year. “Though the conference is smaller, the selection process is even more rigorous,” said Dr. Weber.

“There’s nothing more motivating than performing for a knowledgeable audience,” she said, adding that the Chorale is already putting in extra hours to prepare. “We know we have to bring our best game to shine!”

Dr. Weber is committed to pushing her students to achieve bigger and better things each semester. Her ambitious goals—including securing invitations to national conferences like TMEA and ACDA—reflect those of the MSM, CotA and the University as a whole. “Our unique program gives our students enormous responsibility and encourages them to become leaders,” she said. “UH students belong on a global stage.”
