Who’s Coming into Your House?

A significant part of being a member of UH’s residential community is being social, but are you being socially safe? The semester’s end is getting closer, and many new friends have been made. Unfamiliar faces in your residence hall can present issues. Watch out for fellow residents by guarding against “tailgating” in your residence hall.

Things to Remember:

  • Each building has specific card access.
  • Every resident should swipe their card for entry - no matter if the door is already open.
  • Guests should be met and accompanied by the person they are visiting.
  • Do not pass off your Cougar Card to others.
  • Kindly tell others waiting to enter behind you that they must swipe their card for tracking purposes.

Student Housing & Residential Life staff want your UH space to be your home away from home, so let’s all do our part to help all Cougars feel safe and secure on campus.

Tips on Maintaining a Healthy Student/Personal Life Balance

By Darryl Robinson, RLC Student Support & Wellbeing

As the semester progresses, here are five tips to manage your time and support a healthy balance between school and your personal life.

  1. Create a master schedule by using a planner and time blocking.

Time Blocking divides the day into blocks of time with each block dedicated to doing a specific task or activity and only that specific task or activity. Set specific hours of the day for classes, studying and personal time. Color-code or label these blocks to visually distinguish academic work from personal activities.

Use a planner or digital calendar to input all your deadlines, exams and important dates. Break down large projects into smaller tasks and schedule them throughout the week.

  1. Prioritize tasks with a to-do list.

Break your workload into daily or weekly tasks. Include only what’s necessary and realistic for the day. Check tasks off as you complete them for a boost of motivation!

  1. Set Clear Boundaries to protect your time and avoid overcommitment.

Designate specific times or activities, like meals or evenings, as non-work times where you focus on relaxing and recharging.

Learn to say "no" when your schedule is already packed. It’s better to do a few things well than to spread yourself too thin.

  1. Plan for self-care in your daily or weekly routine.

Block out and schedule time for activities you enjoy or find relaxing (e.g., workouts, hobbies or socializing). Treat these as non-negotiable appointments with yourself.

Planning a short daily mindfulness practice can help reduce stress and improve focus during busy periods.

  1. Review your progress and adjust weekly.

At the end of each week, assess your progress, tweak your schedule and move tasks if needed. This helps you stay flexible and adjust as your workload changes.

Let’s finish the semester by being balanced and taking time to take care of ourselves, Coogs!

SHRL Sustainability – Single-Stream Recycling on Campus

Student Housing & Residential Life and University of Houston (UH) Facilities work together to ensure residents can recycle their items on campus.

All residence halls have recycling containers found in or near their trash rooms (and some lobby areas) to make recycling as convenient as possible. Please refer to the information below for a guide as to what can and cannot go into a recycling container.

What is recyclable on campus?

UH uses a single-stream system, which means anything recyclable can go into the same container. There is no need to separate paper, plastic or glass.

Any recycling bin on campus accepts the following items:

  • Plastics #1-5 and #7 (Styrofoam and other #6 plastics are not accepted)
  • Metals: aluminum, steel and tin (cans, bottles, foil, paperclips, small metal pieces)
  • Tetrapaks: milk cartons, soup containers
  • Paper: white or colored paper, magazines, newspaper, paper board, construction paper and cardstock
  • Corrugated cardboard: This is the only item the University recycles separately. If the cardboard doesn’t fit in a recycle bin, leave it next to or behind a bin for pick up.

All recyclables should be free from food and other contaminants. Containers should be emptied, rinsed and dried when possible.

SHRL is committed to sustainability with improvements coming soon! We want to ensure residents have the tools and knowledge they need to live a sustainable life on campus. For more information on the University’s efforts, please visit https://uh.edu/sustainability/campus-initiatives/recycle/.
