On August 14 and 15, 2024, the Division of Student Affairs International Student and Scholar Services Office (ISSSO) successfully hosted a two-day orientation for nearly 800 new international students. The event created a vibrant and friendly environment for students from around the world, with essential information, tools, and interactive activities to assist them in navigating their new academic adventure.

International Orientation

The orientation began with a warm welcome from University President Renu Khator, Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Paul R. Kittle and the Dean of Students, Donell L. Young, J.D.  "We are excited to have you join our vibrant and diverse university family," President Khator stated. "Your unique perspectives, talents, and experiences enhance our community, and we eagerly anticipate all that you will accomplish during your time here." Their encouraging words set a positive tone for the event, highlighting the university's commitment to creating a welcoming and inclusive space for international students.

A key highlight of the orientation was the presence of college deans and consulate officials from Brazil, India, South Korea, Mexico, Turkey, and Vietnam, all of whom expressed enthusiastic support for the incoming cohort of students. The participation of these consulate officials emphasized the international collaboration involved in welcoming the students, underscoring the university’s dedication to both academic excellence and fostering a multicultural, global learning environment.

The event extended beyond speeches, offering interactive sessions designed to help students adjust to both academic life and living in Houston. Over two days, students engaged in sessions that provided vital information on immigration, academic expectations, campus life, and resources for student success. These sessions included interactive workshops and networking opportunities, allowing new students to connect with their peers, ISSSO staff, and other university departments, ensuring they are well-prepared for their studies and personal growth at UH.

Director of ISSSO Dr. Jin Zhang, one of the key organizers, expressed her excitement in welcoming the new international students this fall. “We’re thrilled to have 1,177 international students check in with our office as they begin their educational journey at UH. These students not only bring a strong work ethic to our campus but also enrich our community with their diverse cultures,” she said.

Overall, the two-day orientation was a resounding success, laying a solid foundation for international students to thrive at UH. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the support and resources provided. The event played a crucial role in helping students feel more at ease in their new environment, ensuring they have the tools necessary to excel both academically and personally.

This orientation not only welcomed students to campus but also reaffirmed UH’s commitment as a diverse, inclusive, and globally minded institution dedicated to the success and well-being of its international community.
