Cultural Taste of Houston (CTOH) is a food festival that showcases the diversity of Houston’s local businesses to promote intercultural awareness by exposing the University of Houston (UH) community to various cultural activities, foods, and entertainment. Cultural Taste of Houston was started in 2017 by the Council for Cultural Activities (CCA), a university-sponsored organization that promotes cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusion at UH, as they recognized the need to promote and celebrate the diversity in the Houston area.

This year, Cultural Taste of Houston returned after a long pause due to Covid-19 on Tuesday, February 7th in Lynn Eusan Park, in partnership with the Center for Student Involvement (CSI). The event gained 2,559 participants, making it CCA’s most attended event to date, including the largest Cultural Taste of Houston since its inception. This year the event comprised of 8 restaurants, 7 vendors, and cultural -related registered student organizations.

Students were able to purchase taste tickets for $1 each so they could try multiple sample sizes of restaurant’s most popular items. CCA, in collaboration with CSI, went out into the Houston community to invite new and previous participants of Cultural Taste of Houston. CCA created a list of restaurants and vendors and identified the culture they represented, with input from the UH community.

“This food fest was absolutely amazing and the best I’ve been too, and proud to have been a part of the planning process. Tons of local restaurants and vendors, with something for everyone to love!” said Zuhayr, assistant director for CCA.

The event’s success is due to the dedication, hard work, and partnership between the Council for Cultural Activities and Center for Student Involvement. The eagerness of the restaurants and vendors wanting to be involved and return to this signature event, and the students and staff who were willing to dedicate their time and volunteer also contributed to the huge success. CCA has received overwhelmingly positive response for the event. One student said, “It’s a popular festival that conveniently brings cultural Houston foods and vendors to campus for students to enjoy at a dollar!”.

CCA is excited to bring it back next year!
