Jim Rantschler received his bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics from the Metropolitan State College of Denver in 1997. From there, he went to the University of Alabama to work at the Center for Materials in Information Technology, earning his doctorate with a dissertation entitled "Microstructure and damping in soft magnetic thin films" in 2003. From there, he worked as a National Research Council postdoctoral associate at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, continuing work in the field magnetodynamics. He is now a postdoctoral associate at the University of Houston working on biomagnetic nanosensors.
