SECTION OF CREATIVE WRITING

announces the

LITERARY AWARD ESCRITURA REVUELTA
Convocation 2020

along the following RULES AND REGULATIONS:
  • The general goal of this award is firstly to celebrate the enormous prowess of literature written in Spanish in the United States, stressing the fact that Spanish is not (and has never been) a foreign language, and, furthermore, that it is not merely a marker of linguistic diversity, but a vehicle of thought, creativity and sensibility. At the same time, the award privileges modes of expression that are less attended to by major publishing houses and even academia. Last but not least, the award is and shall remain overtly political, unsilencing oppressed and underprivileged minorities, allowing for the discussion of important and contested topics, refusing to conceal uncomfortable tensions for the status quo.
  • The particular goal of this literary award is to promote literature as a form to expose discourses, identities and subjectivities as ones who have been under attack by the heteronormative societies which are still imposing role models and values upon subjects while disregarding our diversity as human beings.
  • The specific topic of the 2020 call is Latinx literature, understood as an artistic expression that arises from the different Latin American emigrations, diasporas, and exiles in the United States and their intersectionalities, and which in turn promotes an inclusive language.
  • The award is open to all writers who are enrolled in a Spanish graduate program (MA, MFA, Ph.D.) in the United States for the 2019-2020 academic year.
  • Contestants should submit their work according to the following guidelines:
    • Send five (5) copies of the unpublished manuscript in one sealed envelope. Manuscripts should be between 10-15 poems or 20-40 pages of narrative or drama. Entries should be typed, single sided, and double spaced using Times New Roman or similar font, 12 point, on 8.5 x 11-inch paper and written in Spanish (different modes are accepted: Peninsular Spanish, Latinamerican, or US Latino). On the first page of each of the five copies, ONLY the title of the work should appear.
    • In a separate sealed envelope, a page that states the title of the work, the participant's name, address, and a contact phone number must also be included. On the cover of this envelope, ONLY the title of the work should be written.
    • A copy of at least one semester of course enrollment for the 2019-2020 academic year must be included.
    • All of the documents should be sent in a single envelope to the following address (it is recommended that the package be sent by certified mail):

  • The postmark deadline for submission is September 11, 2020. Submissions will not be returned.
  • One prize of $2,000 will be awarded (this amount may be subject to tax withholdings; to receive the award, participants need to have a SSN and will need to fill out a W9 Form). The administration reserves the exclusive right to publish and promote the work for one year without remuneration to the author. A selection of the awarded work will be published in the magazine Literal, Latin American Voices
  • The jury will be comprised of distinguished writers and professors whose names will be released once the prize has been awarded. The jury’s decision cannot be appealed. The jury retains the right not to grant an award to the 2020 submissions.
  • The jury will announce its decision no later than October 20, 2020. The winner will be announced by the press networks of the Department of Hispanic Studies and the University of Houston.

  • By submitting the work for consideration in the Literary Prize Escritura Revuelta, the participant agrees to the conditions as stated and interpreted by the administration and award committee.

conforme a las siguientes
BASES Y REGULACIONES:

  • El objetivo general de este premio es, en primer lugar, celebrar la extraordinaria calidad de la literatura escrita en español en los Estados Unidos, recalcando que este idioma no es (y nunca ha sido) una lengua extranjera y que, más que un marcador de diversidad lingüística, el español es un vehículo de pensamiento, creatividad y sensibilidad que privilegia modos de expresión a menudo ignorados por las casas editoriales e incluso por la academia. Por último, el premio es y debe mantenerse abiertamente político, rompiendo el silencio de minorías desfavorecidas y oprimidas, permitiendo la discusión de temas importantes y controvertidos, y negándose a ocultar cuestiones incómodas para el status quo.
  • El objetivo particular de este premio literario es promover la literatura como expresión de los discursos, identidades y subjetividades que han sido atacados y marginados por las sociedades hegemónicas o que continúan imponiendo modelos y valores que rechazan la diversidad étnica y cultural.
  • El tema específico de la convocatoria 2020 es la literatura Latinx, entendida como expresión artística que surge de las diferentes emigraciones, diásporas y exilios latinoamericanos en los Estados Unidos, sus interseccionalidades, y que a su vez promueve un lenguaje inclusivo.
  • Podrán concursar todxs lxs escritores que estén inscritos en un programa graduado (MA, MFA, Ph.D.) en español en una Universidad de Estados Unidos durante el año académico 2019-2020.
  • Los concursantes deberán enviar los siguientes documentos:
    • En un sobre cerrado cinco (5) copias de un manuscrito inédito de 10-15 poemas o 20-40 páginas en narrativa o teatro, mecanografiadas a doble espacio, en una sola cara, con letra tipo Times New Roman o similares, en cuerpo 12, en papel tamaño 8,5x11 pulgadas escrito en español (se aceptan diversas modalidades: español peninsular, latinoamericano, o US latino). En dichas copias debe aparecer SOLO el título del trabajo en la primera página.
    • Se debe incluir un sobre cerrado aparte en cuya cubierta se indique SOLAMENTE el título de la obra. Este sobre debe contener una hoja donde figure el título de la obra, el nombre, la dirección y el teléfono del concursante donde pueda ser contactado.
    • Se debe incluir una copia de los cursos inscritos en uno de los semestres del año académico 2019-2020.
    • El sobre con todos los documentos indicados arriba debe dirigirse (se recomienda usar correo certificado) a:

  • La fecha límite para participar en este certamen es el 11 de septiembre de 2020. Se acepta como fecha válida la consignada en el matasellos del sobre. No se devolverán los originales recibidos.
  • Habrá un único premio de $2,000 (estando esta cantidad sujeta a las retenciones legalmente establecidas; para recibir el premio se necesita ser recipiente de un Número de la Seguridad Social, SSN, y rellenar el W9 form). La administración de este premio se reserva durante un año, sin retribución al autor/a premiado/a, el derecho en exclusiva de publicar y difundir el trabajo premiado. Una selección de la obra premiada será publicada en la revista Literal, Latin American Voices.
  • El jurado calificador estará integrado por distinguidxs escritores y profesores y sus nombres serán dados a conocer una vez concedido el premio. La decisión del jurado será inapelable. El premio puede ser declarado desierto.
  • El jurado emitirá su fallo a más tardar el 20 de octubre de 2020 y será divulgado por los medios informáticos del Departamento de Estudios Hispánicos y la Universidad de Houston.
  • La entrega del premio se efectuará en un acto público en fecha y lugar que oportunamente se darán a conocer, en el que se invitará al ganador/a a participar ofreciendo una presentación/recital del trabajo premiado.
  • El hecho de concurrir al Premio Literario Escritura Revuelta implica la aceptación de estas bases, cuya interpretación se reserva la Organización de este certamen y su Jurado Calificador.
