Article I - Allied Health Professions Society

Section 1: The name of this organization will be Allied Health Professions Society.

Article II - Purpose

Section 1:  It will be the purpose of this organization to serve as a resource of information

                 for students considering a career in Allied Health Professions providing     

                 speakers, workshops, admission requirements, field trips, and information    

                 packets regarding the various allied health fields and professional schools.
 

Article III - Membership

Section 1: The membership of this organization will consist of part-time or full-time

               currently enrolled University of Houston students.

 

Section 2: Eligibility Requirements: minimum 2.50 GPA.  If GPA is lower than 2.5 then special requirements will apply,                but membership is still eligible.

Section 3: Members will pay dues in the amount of $25.00 on a yearly basis or $15.00

               per semester.

Section 4: There will be no discrimination of members based on race, handicap, age,

                gender, creed, religion, political persuasion, sexual orientation, or national                  

                origin in determining acceptance to this organization. Membership will be

                based solely on enrollment status, GPA requirements and paid dues.

Section 5: Members are required to attend at least two meetings a semester and participate in one bake sale per         

                semester, either by donating baked goods or by lending a hand at the sales table. Members are also    

                required to attend/volunteer in at least

                one AHPS Sponsored event such as mock exams, application workshops, mock interviews, or socials.Any                 student who meets all of the above requirements will be considered an Active Member for the semester.

 

Section 6: Active Members for the semester will be invited to the end of the year Banquet to be held in April or every 

                Spring Semester.

Section 7: No refunds will be given once dues for the semester or year are paid.

Article IV - Officers

Section 1: The Executive officers of this organization will consist of the following four

                positions:  President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary.

 

Every officer/coordinator will hold three hours (3hrs) of office hours a week, during which they will conduct AHPS business such as checking email, voicemail, and mail.  Making necessary copies and phone calls.  Every officer/coordinator is required to attend two (2) summer/transfer orientations to recruit new students into the organization.  Attend the majority of the meeting and AHPS sponsored events.

President: Recruiting members, speaking to student groups,

officiating meetings, e-mailing necessary information to members, and

assigning office hours as well as assigning meeting to coordinators according to positions. The president must also reserve the corresponding rooms for the meeting that will occur through out the semester/year.

Vice President: Recruiting members, organizing meetings and

advertising.  Another duty is to maintain the point system for scholarships and cords as well as to help arrange certain AHPS events with the President.

Treasurer:
           -Deposit membership dues within 48 hours.
           -Purchase over $20 requires approval from a majority of officers.
           -Receipts are required for all reimbursements
           -Petty Cash is kept in the office for change from membership payment or   

             small miscellaneous purchases.
           -Members taking out petty cash must sign a petty cash receipt & return the

            change & receipt within 30 days.

           -Reserve room space for bake sales and coordinate all the paperwork needed for this event.
           -$150-$200 should be left in checking account for the new officers.

           -Procure funding for field trips and other events by contacting funding sources such as AFB, CEO and others.

 

Secretary: Recording minutes, sending thank you notes to

speakers, keeping an active list of all members with name, address,

telephone numbers, & E-mail address, make banner inserts, as well as sign in sheets. Make sure to e-mail members of AHPS events.  

 

In addition …

 

Coordinators:

Will be elected to recruit guest speakers, organize field trips, and enrich their constituent base. They must maintain a current binder with the most updated information about their profession.  They must also create the flyer to publicize their meeting.  Coordinators must be full time students at UH for the duration of their term. They must also be applying to the program which they serve as coordinator. 

Volunteer Coordinator will arrange group volunteer events every semester.

Public Relations Coordinator will publicize all AHPS events by placing info in the Daily Cougar.

Historian will keep records of all events AHPS participates through out the year and make a scrapbook to be presented at the Banquet.

 

Section 2: Officer Qualifications: Must be a full-time UH student, responsible,

             trustworthy, motivated, a self-starter, and have strong leadership skills.

Section 3: Terms of office: One year.

Section 4: Provisions for removal of an officer: In the event that any officer is viewed as

            neglectful or irresponsible in upholding his/her described duties, he or she may   

            be asked to resign or may be voted for removal by a majority vote of the other

            officers. officers.

 

Article V – Scholarships and Cords

Section 1: The Allied Health Professions Society will award two (2) scholarships. A two hundred dollar ($200) scholarship to the first place and a one hundred dollar ($100) scholarship to the second place. The scholarship will be awarded at the end of the academic year to two active members of the University of Houston, AHPS. They must make the most points according to the following regulations and point system.

Section 2: Points awarded for the following:
1. Attending officially scheduled membership meetings of the UH- A.H.P.S. 5 points for each meeting.
2.Working a full shift during any official UH - A.H.P.S. fundraiser. 3-10 points (according to event, item and time.) 
3.  Blood Drives: 5 points for attempting or bringing a guest and 10 points for donating (max 10 points).  
4.  Volunteering for community service projects that have been pre- approved by the officers of the UH - A.H.P.S. officers (documented and verified).     5 points each project.
5. Volunteer work (not paid) in the medical community (documented and verified).
 (1 point for each 10 hrs worked.)

Section 3: Eligibility

  • Officers (President, V.P., Secretary, Treasurer and Coordinators) are not eligible for scholarships but they qualify for cords.
  • Volunteer work for community service projects must be pre-approved by the officers of the AHPS to earn points. No points will be awarded after the fact.
  • Volunteer work in the medical community will be counted only during the official school semester dates (first class day through last class day) and during the time your membership is active during that time period. The work does not have to be pre-approved, but it must be documented before it will be reviewed and approved by the officers of AHPS.
  • The scholarships will be awarded to the qualified member who earns the most points during the officially declared dates.
  • Members may challenge their points earned to the officers any time prior to one week before the scholarship is awarded. 
  • Should there be a tie for points earned, the member involved in the tie with the highest GPA for that semester will win.
  • If the GPA does not break the tie, the scholarship will be divided between the point winners. 
  • The scholarship will be made out to the winner and he or she may use it in any way seen fit. 
  • The vice- president will keep track of the points at all times. She or He along with the president and the advisor will be the sole decision-makers in totaling points and awarding the scholarships.

Section 4: CORDS

  • Must be a graduating senior
  • Must comply with 50 points per Semester
  • If you become a member on Spring : then 75 points are needed
  • First, Second, Third places with points will be given their cords
  • Everyone else must pay

Article VI - Elections

 

Section 1: Elections of officers will be held in March or April of each year. Officers will

     inform the members of the election meetings by phone calls, flyers, e-mail, and

     general meeting announcements. Members will be notified 4 - 6 weeks prior to

     elections. Members running for office will give a speech the night of the    

     election. In addition, they will post handwritten copies of their speech to   

     members. The voting box will remain in the office several days after the meeting. Winner of the elections and    

     officers for the next year are required to attend the at the end of the

Section 2: Officers will reserve the right to appoint or hold general elections for any

     officer position which may open during the term.


Section 3: All eligible members, including officers, can vote. Greater than 50% of the

     votes will rule a majority decision.

Section 4: First runners-up will be appointed in the event that the elected officer is unable

     to hold his/her office. Incase there were no opposing candidates; members of AHPS will be given the opportunity

     to run for the position.

 

Section 5: It will be the duty of the Treasurer to tally all points unless the treasurer is planning to run for a position.  In

     this point it will be the Presidents duty to tally all points.

Section 6: To run for Officer/Coordinator position one must be a current member of AHPS. To run for the President,

     an officer has to serve at least a year as either as Vice President, secretary, or as treasurer.  For the Vice President,

     the secretary, and the treasurer position a candidate has to have held an officer/coordinator position previously with

     the organization.  Any active member of AHPS can run for Coordinator positions.

 

Section 7: Only current AHPS members can vote.

 

Section 8: All members interested in running for office must turn in a Leadership application.  The executive officers will

     check status of each candidate, such as whether they are active or not before placing their name in the ballot.

 

Section 9: Only executive officers are allowed to give out applications for positions.

 

Article VII - Meetings

Section 1: Regular meetings of this organization will be held each month on a

     Tuesday or Wednesday, depending on officers’ schedule.

Section 2: Notification of all meetings (date, time, location & contact person) will be

     made by flyers within at least 7 days notice. Notification will also be made trough emails to all members informing   

     them about upcoming events.  A banner hanging in the UC will          

     also be updated with upcoming meeting information.

Article VIII - Committees

Section 1: Standing committees: Public Relations, phone, fund-raising, social committee,     

     and web site.

Section 2: Appointment of committees is by the President and Vice President.

 

Article IX - Executive Board

Section 1: There will be one advisor who will be members ex officio with no voting

           privileges.
 
Section 2: Executive Officer (Past Presidents):  This officer’s duty is to serve as an

          advisor and share experiences with the current President. This officer must have been President in order to      

          serve in this position and it would be customary for the outgoing President to retain this position. He or She can 

          attend meeting and events but will have no voting privileges.

Section 3: The Executive Officers include the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary

Article X - Amendment of Constitution

Section 1: The constitution  may be altered at any time with three of the four Executive Officers written approval on the

         amendment.

 

Section 2: The interpretation of the constitution, scholarship guidelines and officer/coordinator duties constitution are up

        to the Executive Officers.
