Each year, the University of Houston participates in the Hess Houston Corp 5K in Memorial Park alongside a variety of Houston schools, businesses, and industries. The fun event occurs in October over three consecutive days from 4 – 7:30 PM, allowing an ever-growing number of employees from around the city to participate.

This year 8,000 Houstonians, the highest number of participants in the event’s seven-year history, visited the park to exercise, de-stress, and socialize with their colleagues in the great outdoors.

Designed to promote physical fitness and wellness in the workplace, participation in the annual fun run/walk event was hosted by the University’s HR POWER UP Employee Wellness Program. A participating team since the Corp 5k’s inception, and past “Top Participating Education Team Award” winner, this year’s Team UH had 90 members strong, comprised of returning and new employee participants.

On Oct. 19, UH Day at the Corp 5K, employees from across the campus gathered in the Everglades section of the park to run and/or walk the 3.1-mile course. For the first time, HR POWER UP hosted a tent inside the Hospitality Village to support employees in their efforts to exercise and engage in healthy activities. Following their run/walk, UH teammates enjoyed food, fun, and camaraderie – and even a surprise visit from UH alum Mayor Turner!
