What is digital signage?
Digital signage refers to electronic displays that show different types of content such as streaming video, image slideshows, menus, advertisements, interactive wayfinding maps, emergency notifications, and more. Digital signage offers a way to promote advertising and information to targeted audiences based on the location of the signs, with content managed remotely from a central computer that handles editing and scheduling of sign changes.

The University Information Technology (UIT) digital signage solution supports several different types of content, including the display of:
- Video streaming
- Web pages
- Static text content such as MS Word documents and PDFs
- Live data (XML, CSV, external database)
- RSS feeds
- Bing maps
- Wayfinding (interactive display showing how to navigate from one area to another)
- Widgets (weather, date/time)
UIT offers a centrally managed enterprise solution for controlling digital signage content players. Software licensing for signage players is provided to departments at no cost. As an added service, UIT can work with departments to do a comprehensive review of their signage needs including:
- Installation assessment
- Network assessment
- Graphic/template design
- Content integration
- Wayfinding designs
- Training and support
Another key advantage to using a centrally managed signage solution is that UH Department of Public Safety is empowered to display alerts and announcements during emergency situations. From one source almost immediately, emergency notifications can be displayed on digitals signs across the entire campus.
