English - Shakespeare's Major Plays

Although not particularly popular today, as mentioned at the beginning of these remarks, Richard II was very popular in Shakespeare's time. Five quartos were printed between 1597 and 1615. Only the first was unsigned, the last four are identified as Shakespeare's. The play is also, of course, included in the First Folio. All of these texts differ from one another in part because they were set by hand, and typesetters will make errors in the course of setting the text. But in some cases a different copy text has been used by the printer. All of this gives scholars a large amount of material over which they argue and speculate. The possibilities are nearly endless.
