One must be very careful in ascribing too much in the way of thematic material to Shakespeare's comedies. These plays are meant largely as entertainment; however, there are clearly some ideas that are being advanced.

Inconsistency and unpredictability in personal intimate relationships is a theme that Shakespeare returns to time after time. Coupled with that is a desire for that which we seem unable to attain. When Demetrius falls in love with Helena, she is suspicious and less interested in him. But when Demetrius is in love with Hermia, Helena follows him around like a puppy dog even though he treats her as a dog.

The significance of chance and circumstance in one's life. The four lovers head off to the forest on a blind and irrational quest for freedom and safety. What happens to them is not what was planned, but the outcome was nevertheless more than satisfactory. By the same token the artisans seek to gain fame and fortune in an improbable production of a ridiculous play. The performance was so bad it was comical and they all come away satisfied with their effort. Shakespeare may be saying that one should do something even if it appears doomed to failure.
