Lactation Room Information

Lactation Accommodations

Under the new federal health care requirements, employers are required to provide break time for nursing parents with lactation needs. The University of Houston understands the importance and benefits of breast feeding for babies and therefore has adopted a policy stating that the University will provide an appropriate location and a reasonable amount of break time to accommodate employees who are nursing parents for a period of up to one (1) calendar year after the birth of the nursing child, pursuant to applicable state and federal laws. Ideally, the time will run concurrently with an employee’s paid break time.

The first step is filling out a lactation accommodation request form. This form should be signed by both the employee & supervisor.

If a supervisor denies or amends the request, the form must be submitted to the Office of Equal Opportunity Services (EOS) for review and signature.

Lactation Room Card Access

The University of Houston is pleased to provide multiple lactation rooms across campus to meet the needs of nursing parents. The locations are varied with different hours and facilities. We have three card-access rooms, and these are located in Melcher Hall (Bauer College of Business), the MD Anderson Library, and in Energy Research Park (ERP) Buildings 3 and 4. These rooms REQUIRE Cougar Card Access to enter. To obtain access complete the WGRC Lactation Room Access Form and your Cougar Card will be set to access the room for a full year. The rooms are first come, first served. Forms should be submitted to the WGRC at wgrc@uh.edu, via fax at 713.743.5097 or submitted in person (SC North Room 201). Please note, processing time is 5 business days.
