Immediate Actions and Long-Term Commitment
February 8, 2025
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
The recent crimes on our campus are deeply disturbing, and I want to acknowledge the fear, concern and frustration many of you are feeling. These incidents are unacceptable, and I share in your outrage. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities, and I want to assure you that we are taking decisive action to address these concerns and enhance safety across campus.
UHPD Arrests Sexual Assault SuspectLast night, the University of Houston Police Department arrested an individual who matches the description of the assailant in yesterday’s assault. The suspect was taken into custody near the scene. Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, we are unable to release further details at this time. The University will provide updates as the investigation progresses and as information becomes available for release.
Long-Term Commitment to Campus SafetyEffective immediately, UHPD assigned four officers to 24/7 patrols at the Welcome Center Garage due to its proximity to the Metro Light Rail Line and this week’s activity. In the near term, you will also see an increased security presence across campus and in parking structures.
While these immediate actions are critical, we are also focused on strengthening our security infrastructure for the long term. The UH Executive Steering Committee on Safety and Security is meeting to develop a comprehensive plan with both immediate and sustained strategies to address safety concerns and enhance protection across campus.
Available Support and ResourcesI recognize the impact these terrible events have had on our entire community. If you or someone you know needs support, UH offers 24/7 resources to assist you. CoogsCARE provides counseling, advocacy and essential resources to faculty, staff and students to support your well-being. You are not alone — we are here for you.
Campus safety is not just a priority — it is a responsibility we take seriously. We are listening. We are acting. Our campus must remain a safe learning and working environment, and we will not tolerate criminal activity on our campus.
We are grateful for your continuing engagement and vigilance to keep our University safe.
Sincerely,
Renu Khator
President, University of Houston
