Delta Iota Chapter Bylaws

ARTICLE I
Name

The name of this Society shall be the Delta Iota Chapter of Phi Beta Delta.

 

ARTICLE II
Aim
The aim of Phi Beta Delta is to recognize and encourage high professional, intellectual and personal achievements in the field of International Education.  The Society will serve as a means of encouraging interdisciplinary and intergenerational contacts and promoting the exchange of ideas and information in the area of international affairs among students, faculty and staff of the University community and between it and other academic institutions.

 

ARTICLE III
Membership

SECTION I

Membership shall be based on criteria established by the Membership Committee and approved by the Governing Board in accordance with the aims of the organization. The criteria are as follows:

  1. International and Permanent Resident students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement [3.5 GPA for graduate students and 3.2 GPA for upper division (60 or more completed credit hours) undergraduate students] and who have been actively involved in promoting international understanding at the University of Houston or in other settings. 

    U.S. students who have demonstrated high scholastic achievement [3.5 GPA for graduate students and 3.2 GPA for upper division (60 or more completed credit hours) undergraduate students] and who have been actively involved in promoting international understanding at the University of Houston or in other settings.

  2. Distinguished faculty and staff who have been involved in recognized international endeavors such as teaching, conducting research, participating in overseas projects, administering exchange programs, or providing services to international students and scholars.

SECTION 2

All candidates shall be duly initiated according to the rites of the society.

 

ARTICLE IV
Governing Board

SECTION 1

The Governing Board shall include both faculty and student members and may include members of the University staff.

SECTION 2

The Governing Board shall consist of the President, President-elect, Student Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary, chairpersons of the standing committees, and the Chapter Coordinator.

SECTION 3

The Governing Board shall establish standing committees, all of which must include faculty and student members and may include members of the University staff.

 

ARTICLE V
Officers

SECTION 1

The elected officers shall be President, President-elect, Student Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. The positions of Secretary and Treasurer may be combined.

SECTION 2

The President shall serve a one year term, preside over meetings of the society, appoint committees with the approval of the Governing Board, and shall perform all other duties belonging to the Chief Executive Officer.

SECTION 3

The President-elect shall serve a one year term, preside in the absence of the President, and perform other duties as assigned by the President. The President-elect shall assume the duties of the President in the year following his/her term.

SECTION 4

The Student Vice President shall serve as the liaison between the Governing Board and the student members and may be appointed by consent of the Governing Board to preside in the absence of the President and the President-elect.

SECTION 5

The Secretary shall keep minutes of all meetings, shall handle chapter communications, shall keep a complete roster of all members initiated and shall keep a record of candidates eligible for membership.

SECTION 6

The Treasurer shall report to the Chapter on all monies collected or disbursed.

 

ARTICLE VI
Chapter Coordinator

SECTION 1

The Chapter Coordinator shall be faculty or staff and will serve as a liaison between the Chapter and the Executive Office. The Director of International Student and Scholar Services will serve as the Chapter Coordinator.

SECTION 2

The duties of the Chapter Coordinator shall be to serve as chapter liaison to the Society, its Executive Office and the Board; to maintain a list of active chapter members; to assure compliance at the chapter level with policies, procedures, and reporting requirements of the Society; to advise the Chapter concerning policy, organization, and management; to collect and give receipts for all monies collected; to make disbursements upon order of the Chapter; to keep an accurate and complete record of all receipts and disbursements; and to perform other duties as determined by the Chapter.

SECTION 3

The term of office for the Chapter Coordinator shall be determined by the Governing Board.

 

ARTICLE VII
Committees

SECTION 1

The standing committees of the Chapter shall include the following:

  • Constitution and By-Laws Committee

  • Membership Committee

  • Program Committee

  • Publicity Committee

  • Scholarship Development Committee

  • Nominations Committee

Other committees may be established by the Governing Board as needed.

SECTION 2

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee shall recommend standards for admission to the Society and will receive and recommend nominations for membership.

SECTION 3

Program Committee

The Program Committee shall plan activities and ceremonies for the Chapter.

SECTION 4

Publicity Committee

The Publicity Committee shall plan and arrange for the publicity of the activities and accomplishments of the Chapter.

SECTION 5

Scholarship Development Committee

The Scholarship Development Committee shall plan, coordinate, and implement the scholarship program of the Chapter.

 

ARTICLE VIII
Dues and Fees

SECTION 1

The membership initiation fee shall be paid by each undergraduate, graduate, faculty and staff candidate at the time of initiation into the Society. The amount of this fee shall be determined by the Governing Board and shall be paid to the Treasurer before initiation into the Society.

SECTION 2

The annual sustaining fee for each member of the Society shall be paid on or before May 1 of each year.
