While many Houstonians know Jim McIngvale as "Mattress Mack" of Gallery Furniture, the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work looked beyond the showroom to recognize the energetic spokesman's charity work. In recognition of his devotion to philanthropy, the college will award McIngvale with the Spirit of Social Work award at the biennial spring dinner on April 29 at the River Oaks Country Club.
The benefit, "Heroes Among Us," will feature Lt. Col. Nathan Keller as guest speaker, highlighting his nationally recognized social work research and expertise in clinical mental health practice with military personnel. Proceeds from the dinner will fund Master of Social Work scholarships and the operation of the American Humanics Non-profit Certificate Program at UH.
"Mr. McIngvale's spirit and efforts to help those in need has earned him the respect of humanitarians in Houston and beyond," said Ira Colby, dean of the college. "We are honored to recognize distinguished leaders like Mr. McIngvale and Lt. Col. Keller for their local and international impact, in the field of mental health in particular."
KPRC chief meteorologist Frank Billingsley will serve as master of ceremonies, with additional entertainment provided by the Moores School Concert Chorale. The event is chaired by Karen Winston, co-chaired by Julie Crosswell with Mr. and Mrs. David Underwood serving as honorary co-chairs.
The program is scheduled to begin with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. Individual tickets start at $150 per person. For details call 713-743-8085.
