Pulitzer Prize winner and former University of Houston professor Edward Albee’s first
play, 1958’s “The Zoo Story,” shocked audiences with its raw language and chaotic
conclusion. Nonetheless, this one-act play, depicting a haunting encounter between
the mild-mannered Peter and emotionally troubled Jerry, has mesmerized generations
of theater-goers.
Nearly 30 years later, Albee’s “Homelife” provides a look at an intense dialogue between Peter and his wife, Ann, that took place minutes prior to the events in “The Zoo Story.”
Houstonians will get a look at these two provocative works as the University of Houston School of Theatre & Dance presents the city premiere of “At Home at the Zoo” Feb. 13 – 22 in UH’s Jose Quintero Theatre. Albee is scheduled to be at the Feb. 21 performance.
“Edward Albee has a gift for language,” said the play’s director Sidney Berger, John and Rebecca Moores Professor of Theatre. “There is a raw honesty in his writing that energizes his plays. This one is no exception. While these two acts were written decades apart, there is no loss of energy or emotion. Both acts are equally powerful and examples of Albee at his finest.”

Tickets are $20, $15 for UH alumni, faculty and staff and $10 for students and seniors.
