2025 Summer Assessment Institute
The Provost's Office invites faculty and staff from the UH system to participate in the annual summer institute sponsored by the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness. Sessions focus on utilizing higher education assessment and data practices to impact student success and provide for collaborative learning and networking.
Some of this year's session topics include:
- UH By the Numbers
- Automating Academic Assessment Reporting
- Excel for Beginners to Intermediates
- Survey Creation
- Experiential Learning
- Lightcast
Table Talk: Share effective practices, successful strategies, and information about how your program supports institutional effectiveness. These informal discussions are an opportunity for attendees to network, learn about the work going on in other parts of the UH System, and share their questions and challenges. Attendees are invited to rotate among several discussion topics. Coffee and light bites will be available.
Topics include Accreditation Basics, Artificial Intelligence, Assessment in an Evolving Service Model, the Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement, Disciplinary Accreditation, Institutional Research, Quality Enhancement Plans, and Qualtrics.

Title: Creating a Survey: A Primer and Workshop in One
Presenter: Pamelyn Shefman, University of Houston Clear Lake
Location: Rockwell Pavilion
Description: “I was asked to create a survey for that, now what? Someone told me that a survey
would be easy?” If these questions are familiar, this is the session for you. A quick
primer on what surveys are and key question types will be followed by some workshop
time to get that survey completed before the first day of classes. Bring your own,
build it on site, or just come for the fun that is creating a survey. If you are working
on a survey, please bring a laptop to access during the session.
Title: By the Numbers: Accessing Restricted Data to Empower Decision Making
Presenter: Moumita Mukherjee and Prathyusha Reddy Nandikonda, University of Houston
Location: Honors Computer Lab
Description: UH By the Numbers has information not only on student/faculty demographics but also
graduation rates, degrees awarded, semester hour completion, and financial aid. It
also has data on the upcoming summer and fall semesters to help plan for course enrollments
and newly admitted students. In this session we will demonstrate how to use UH By
the Numbers to get the data you need for your assessment reports, grant proposals,
and student or faculty demographics. Preregistration required.
Title: Data-Driven Global Learning: Measuring Cultural Intelligence to Drive Global Learning
Outcomes
Presenter: Maggie Mahoney, University of Houston
Location: Honors Classroom
Description: We want to help every student become a global citizen, but how do we measure and assess
it? This session explores how the University of Houston’s Institute for Global Engagement
leverages the Cultural Intelligence (CQ) assessment as part of its Global Competence
Accelerator (GCA) to evaluate and support student learning across global programs.
Participants will gain insight into the structure and goals of the GCA, how CQ is
used alongside other tools like the AAC&U Global VALUE rubric, and how these assessments
contribute to student growth and program improvement. The session will highlight both
the practical implementation and the broader alignment with IGE’s mission to develop
globally competent graduates.

Title: You Are an Assessment Person: Exploring the Data Identity Framework
Presenter: Miguel Arellano Arriaga and Tiffany Davis, University of Houston
Location: Rockwell Pavilion
Description: The Data Identity Framework identifies an individual’s strengths and areas of opportunity
in assessment practices. The session will review the Data Identity Framework developed
by Amelia Parnell (2021), discuss the results of the self-assessment, and reflect
on one’s own strengths. Attendees will also be encouraged to identify ways they can
leverage their data identity in collaborative projects and in their own work.
Title: Excel 101: Mastering the Basics
Presenter: Ashley Askew, University of Houston
Location: Honors Computer Lab
Description: This session introduces participants to the essential tools of Excel, including navigating
the interface, data entry, formatting spreadsheets, using basic formulas, sorting
and filtering information, and charts. Preregistration required.
Title: Experiential Learning at UH: A Longitudinal Survey
Presenters: Christina Williams and Monica Thompson (Respondent), University of Houston

Description: This session presents key findings from a three-year survey (2022-2024) examining
internship, research, and experiential learning experiences from UH undergraduates.

Title: Automating Academic Assessment Reporting with our In-House Tool
Presenter: Tariq Aziz, University of Houston

Description: The Academic Program Assessment Report (APAR) web app is an innovative tool in development,
designed to enhance the assessment process for University of Houston degree programs.
It captures key elements like student and program learning outcomes, along with department
and college goals, organized by year, college, department, and program. In this presentation,
we will explore the app's key features and functionalities.
Title: Excel 102: Intermediate Tools for Organizing and Analyzing Data
Presenter: Ashley Askew, University of Houston

Description: This session builds foundational skills by introducing logical and lookup functions,
drop-down lists, conditional formatting, linking worksheets, and PivotTables. Preregistration
required.
Title: Lightcast: An Introduction to the Post-Graduation Outcomes Data Tool
Presenter: Amy O’Neal, University of Houston
Location: Honors Classroom
Description: The University of Houston System has just added a new tool. Lightcast tracks alumni
using national student clearinghouse data and labor market data. The session will
explore the tool and help you get started using it to gain insights on your alumni.
