Cougar Tutors

The Cougar Tutors program, managed by the UH Advancing Community Engagement and Service (ACES) Institute, employs University of Houston students as literacy and academic tutors in high-need public schools. 

Job Description 

Cougar Tutors work between 12 and 15 hours per week at an assigned elementary, middle or high school campus to provide academic support via small group and full class instruction during the academic year from September to December and February to June. This is an in-person position

Compensation 

The hourly rate for the Cougar Tutor position is $16 an hour.  

Job Responsibilities 

  • Work 12 to 15 hours per week Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.; schedules are set at the start of each semester based on tutor availability and school needs 
  • Work in partnership with on-campus coordinator and classroom teacher to support daily instruction of students 
  • Support students in small group and full classroom setting 
  • Support the preparation of classroom materials 
  • Participate in classroom planning, tracking, and analyzing student data 
  • Uphold the expectations of the school and classroom to support student learning and growth 
  • Communicate frequently and honestly with the coordinator/teacher regarding student progress and areas of concern 

Qualifications for Eligibility 

  • Currently enrolled as a UH or UH-Downtown student 
  • A minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA 
  • Must have reliable transportation 
  • Previous tutoring or mentoring experience 
  • Strong written and verbal skills in English; bilingualism preferred (Spanish)
