What was your experience working with the Office of Government and Community Relations? What did you get out of this experience?
I really enjoyed my time working with the Office of Government and Community Relations at the University of Houston. It was an incredibly meaningful experience where I built lifelong connections with an amazing team. There wasn't a single day that went by without bonding and laughter. Through this role, I learned the value of patience and discovered the versatility and impact that a marketing degree can have. It was in this office that I first saw a clear vision of what I wanted to pursue as a career. As a first-generation Latina, I was surrounded by strong, career-driven women who inspired me every day. They taught me the importance of standing up for myself and for my community, and they showed me that even the smallest changes can make a big impact. Most importantly, they showed me what true leadership looks like- leadership rooted in empathy, purpose, and service. I carry those lessons with me every day in my current role as a Communications Manager, where I strive to foster connection and amplify voices in my community. This experience helped me find my passion for community relations, and I hope to continue along this path, creating meaningful change and connections wherever I go.

What was your experience working with the Office of Government and Community Relations? What did you get out of this experience?

My experience with the Office of Government and Community Relations was invaluable. I gained so much insight and knowledge into government and community relations and the impact it has on higher education. After my student worker experience in 2012, I was able to join the team as a full time staff worker in 2016. To this day, I use many of the skills and experiences I gained in my current role, and I’m forever grateful for the experience and knowledge I gained from the team and my various roles at UH. From working with students, student organizations, and staff, to working with the community and stakeholders, it was a rewarding and impactful experience.
