CLASS Dean’s Heritage Society Internship
Description
The Heritage Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Houston community. Founded in 1954, the society strives to protect and share the stories and artifacts that represent the history and traditions of our local area.
The CLASS Dean’s Heritage Society Internship offers two positions:
1) An Archival Intern who will assist with preserving and managing the Heritage Society’s archival collection. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in history, excellent organizational skills, and a willingness to learn and contribute to a dynamic, mission-driven organization.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the organization and cataloging of archival materials
- Support the digitization process of documents and the maintenance of digital archives
- Adhere to archival processing guidelines and procedures
- Contribute to the maintenance of databases and record-keeping systems.
- Proficiency in using computer software (Past Perfect) for data management and research
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
2) A Docent Intern who will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the fields of history, education, and museum management. Under the supervision of our knowledgeable staff, the ideal candidate will assist in leading tours, developing educational materials, and helping with special events and programs.
Responsibilities:
- Lead tours of our historic buildings and exhibitions for visitors of all ages
- Conduct in-depth research on the history of Houston and the heritage represented at The Heritage Society
- Present educational materials and activities for school groups and other tour groups
- Assist with executing special events and programs, including workshops, lectures, and family-friendly activities
- Collaborate with staff on developing and implementing tours and programs to engage the community
Requirements for both internships:
- Applicants must be currently enrolled in a CLASS major. History, public history, or other related program preferred
- Commitment to a minimum of 40 hours a week during the internship
- Must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the US
- Attend orientation prior to internship placement
- Applicants must have a GPA of 3.25 or higher
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and visitors of all ages and backgrounds
- Must have a strong interest in place-based history and a desire to learn about and share the diverse heritage of Houston
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
