Andrea Szabo

Andrea Szabo is an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Houston specializing in industrial organization and development economics. Most of Andrea’s research applies structural methods from industrial organization, in particular demand estimation using big data, to developing country settings. Her work has provided insights into the efficient operation of public utilities, the optimal allocation of production inputs, the financing of small firms, and the impact of quantity discounts on consumers. Andrea has done extensive field work in South Africa and Ghana, partnering with both private and government organizations including Odi Water and the City of Tshwane.

Andrea’s long-standing interest in public utilities and infrastructure development extends to the US, where she has studied internet regulation, dams, and the National Park system. Her work often combine different types of data, ranging from large administrative datasets and supermarket scanner data, to survey data and randomized experiments.

Andrea has presented her research at top universities including Harvard, Chicago and Yale, and has published in prestigious journals such as Econometrica, Journal of the European Economic Association, and Journal of Development Economics. She received her PhD in Economics from the University of Minnesota in 2010.
