Northern Women

Below are a few reminiscences from the northern women who took part in WIMS.  Interviews with several of the northern women can be found in Special Collections at the University of Virginia and the University of Houston.

  • After the teams had all returned from Mississippi, WIMS lifted the ban on publicity. The NCNW issued a press release explaining the goals and activities of the project. The article was disseminated by UPI and carried in newspapers across the country.
  • Doris Wilson remembers the Black Women of 1964
As the black WIMS staff member in Jackson in 1964, Wilson met and shepherded all the Northern black women during their trips to Mississippi.
  • Priscilla Hunt, Susie Goodwillie Stedman, and Geraldine Kohlenberg Zetzel discuss women’s methods of communication employed in their activism.
  • Sylvia Weinberg Radov in an interview with Amy Murrell remembers what she and other Chicago team members tried to do for civil rights after they returned home.
