CTAP: From Pilot to University-wide Program

CTAP info

The university’s flat rate course materials program, called Cougar Textbook Access Program (CTAP), received high marks from participating students this fall semester.

Fall 2023 was the first time this program was available to all undergraduate students, after being launched as a pilot program in spring 2022. This fall, 77% of undergraduate students participated in the program, which is voluntary for students, as they can opt-out of the program by the official registration date.

Students can use their direct financial aid to pay for course materials, and course materials are available to students on or before the first day of classes.

Student feedback about the program continues to be positive.

“I found CTAP very helpful, and I believe it should be implemented every year going forward. If a student is taking over three classes (9+ hours), I believe CTAP is extremely beneficial. It can be a hassle to buy each textbook or access code, and it can be overwhelming as well,” said Nutrition major Shahzeb Kahlon.

“The price is fair as most materials required for classes would be more than the CTAP price. As a senior, I wish CTAP was available throughout my whole college journey, and I believe it’s a huge benefit for all future students.”

While Kahlon could only take advantage of CTAP in her final year, the program will have lasting effects on new students.

“This flat payment of nearly $300 is a much more affordable way of getting your textbooks than trying to rent or buy them off different websites. This resource provides a more affordable way to access all the class materials needed,” said freshman Baily Johnson.

“I chose to stay opted into CTAP because it is a good, cost-effective way for me to get all my supplies on time and for a better price. I definitely recommend that future students participate in this program for every year you have at UH.”

While the CTAP program is in its initial stages of being university-wide, the long-term prognosis looks promising.
