Students Can Take Break from Studies at Finals Mania

Finals Mania 1Twice a year it happens.

A line of students snakes its way through the M.D. Anderson Library, as the smell of coffee and maple syrup floats through the air.

It’s Finals Mania, a tradition that takes place for one night at the end of the fall and spring semesters to provide weary University of Houston students a welcome break from the stress of studying for final exams.

The popular event returns on Monday, Dec. 5, from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. Students just need to bring their Cougar Card ID and a hearty appetite.

More than 1,700 students are expected to attend. They’ll be served pancakes, turkey sausage, coffee, orange juice, hot chocolate and snacks. While it doesn’t kick off until 8:30 p.m., students start lining up close to an hour beforehand.

Finals Mania 2“This is a tradition that keeps growing in popularity among students each and every year, and for good reason,” said Leighanne Dean, marketing coordinator for Auxiliary Services. “They put a lot of time and energy into their studies, and Finals Mania gives them a well-deserved break that helps them clear their minds and recharge their mental batteries.”

The festivities will once again kick off with members of the UH band performing several songs from the second floor balcony. Then, the line starts moving through the serving area, which features three varieties of pancakes: plain, chocolate chip and blueberry. Numerous toppings can be added, including whipped cream, strawberries, butter and syrup.

Finals Mania is sponsored by Auxiliary Services, Dining Services, UH Libraries, Canteen Vending and Coca-Cola.

The event runs smoothly as a result of the hard work and dedication of UH faculty and staff volunteers who donate their time and energy. Those who would like to help can sign up online or by contacting Dean at lndean@central.uh.edu or 713-743-0991.
