Houston’s serene Buffalo Bayou soon will be transformed into a futuristic feast for the eyes and ears.

Artist and software designer Johnny DeKam will pit his vibrant video visions against the sonic backdrop of musician Steve Nalepa’s atmospheric electronic compositions – rendered from a laptop – during a one-time-only performance along the bayou.

The unique, site-specific audiovisual show, “DeKam vs Nalepa,” takes place at 7 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 6 at the Sabine-to-Bagby Promenade just outside downtown Houston. This free event will be last installment of this fall’s performance series “Nights on Blue Bayou: City Soundscapes” presented by the University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts and the Buffalo Bayou Partnership.

“This will be a site-specific experience about Houston,” said Karen Farber. “It will juxtapose the bayou’s natural beauty with the industrial rush of the freeway overpass, which I think perfectly encapsulates Houston’s diverse landscape.”

DeKam has provided computer-generated imagery for performers such as hip hop giant Eminem, rock troupe Dream Theater and electronic music pioneer Thomas Dolby. He also has lent his talents to the worlds of theater and opera. In 1998, he founded the company VIDVOX, which produces software used in live video production.

Nalepa also is no stranger to artistic collaboration, having worked with jazz great Pharaoh Sanders, legendary producer Bill Laswell and numerous audiovisual artists on the west coast. He’s performed at the popular Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and a host of events devoted to new technologies and the merging of music and imagery.
