Houston is a city of many sounds. Some are steeped in nature while others are a reflection of the city’s urban dynamics. Place this alongside arrangements for a string quartet and film footage of rail cars, landscapes, and other images, and the result is a unique experience combining sight and sound.

Houston audiences can enjoy such an experience when composer Kurt Stallmann joins forces with filmmaker Alfred Guzzetti during the next installment of Nights on Blue Bayou: City Soundscapes.

Stallmann and Guzzetti will present a free performance of “SONA: Sounds of Houston – Wind, Rains, Trains” at 7 p.m., Nov. 15 at the Sabine-to-Bagby Promenade along Buffalo Bayou just outside of downtown.

“When I composed this work, I was coming to terms with calling Houston my new home,” Stallmann said. “These were the sounds I was hearing all the time, so I incorporated them into a soundscape of my environment.”

Joined by Houston expatriates Enso String Quartet, Stallmann and Guzzetti will present a performance rich in natural and synthesized sounds, haunting compositions and stirring imagery.

Arrangements are composed by Stallmann, with audio inspired by or recorded from local freight trains, rains and 2005’s Hurricane Rita.

“SONA” is presented by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at UH in collaboration with the Buffalo Bayou Partnership and Aurora Picture Show.

The final City Soundscapes event will feature video artist Johnny DeKam and laptop musician Steve Nalepa on Dec. 6.
