Joanne King Herring, diplomat, socialite and author of the new book "Diplomacy and Diamonds: My Wars from the Ballroom to the Battlefield", will tell her story as part of the 15th annual "Living Archives" interview series, sponsored by the University of Houston Friends of Women Studies.
Herring will be interviewed by Houston Chronicle reporter Claudia Feldman beginning at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the Rockwell Pavilion in the UH M.D. Anderson Library.
"We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Herring," said Elizabeth Gregory, professor and director of the UH Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies program, which hosts the interviews. "She has been, and continues to be, an influential player in historic events, and her story will be captivating."
"Living Archives" interviews are recorded before an audience and archived in the Carey C. Shuart Women's Archive and Research Collection. The Shuart Archive collects the oral histories of Texas women, the papers of Houston area women's organizations and individual Houston women who've made history. The archive's more than 50 collections include: the papers of Houston mayors Kathy Whitmire and Annise Parker, and Texas suffragist Minnie Fisher Cunningham, as well as such groups as the Houston Area Women's Center, Hispanic Women in Leadership; the Association for Women in Science; the Houston Heights Woman's Club, and the Top Ladies of Distinction. Herring's papers soon willbe added to the archive.
Lunch is served after the interview. Admission is free to students and members of the Friends of Women's Studies, $10 to the general public.
Herring will sign copies of her book, available for purchase, directly following the event.
She will be available for media interviews from 11 a.m to 11:30 a.m. in the Rockwell Pavilion.
